I'll always be thankful for her part in taking down Socialism in the UK and elsewhere.

You should really thank the labour party, during the early 80s they went on a 'rampage' expelling members of militant and the far left factions of the labour party. As soon as it became apparent that Militant was a growing threat to the status quo of the Labour party Kinnock and the reformers were ruthless in their purge.

Contry to popular belief Labour did far more to eliminate socialism from main stream politics than the Conservatives.

Agreed - the battle between the ultra leftism of the likes of Deggsy Hatton, Ken and Bernie Grant and the reformers in the Kinnock camp, who at least realised that something had to be done, socialism died a death and left us with the vacuum that was andf continues to be Noo Labour

Dungarees, militant lesbians, psycho coppers, waving money at northerners, actors lip synching Sein Fein, cages for terraces, cardboard cities, SAW, FRANKIE SAYS RELAX, Brookside.

I miss the 80's.

There is something amusing about this yet also quite tragic.

Is all this delight in the demise of an 87 year old woman with dementia proportionate or indeed seemly ??

Not too much class on display is there ?

It'd bee a lot more vibrant if it had been a 50 year old woman.

Well she did order the sinking of the Belgano, outside of the exclusion zone, killing several hundred people and possibly a war crime (throws cat out into the crowd of pidgeons).

Of all the old cock and bull, truth, half truth and damn lie I have read about Mrs T my favourite thing is still my mate offering condolensces on her death to Mr T, Face and Howlimg Mad Murdoch on his FB page..

I would suggest the order to sink a warship that may or may not be a threat isnt exactly up their with the actions of Saddam, Mugabe or and Assad and even they arent exactly going to make World Biggest C*nt in World Leaders Top Trumps

Dont get me wrong - in my yoof I was very Stand Down Margaret - I was one of her children after all by accident of DOB so was affected by her as a child and young adult but I simply cannot understand how people are so blinkered after all this time to not see the complete picture of the woman and the political landscape and social structure at the time that she and her ilk operated in.

You could quite easily blame the left wing for its ridiculous self implosion throughout the period which consistently failed to protect or act in the best interests of the working class or the ordinary citizens of the country - the labour party failed as much as Thatcherism created a sink or swim society

You would think Britian was some kind of golden utopia whwre streets were paved with gold and we all loved each other unconditionally until she got her claws into it to read some of the stuff on her and elsewhere

Selective political amnesia, blind party ideology or just plain stupidity and ignorance seem to be the order of the day whichever way you turn which is why I am aiming to stay out of it all

Ouch. I remember the era well, its the era I grew up in, being born in 1971. I remember the Poll Tax, the Miners strike, the selling off of council homes, the steep rise in homelessness following care in the community, the 'crack down' on youth of acid house, Clause 28*, housing booms, recessions, The handover of Hong Kong, NHS waiting lists, mass privitisation, the falklands conflict, the massive unemployment that was a harrowing of the north, wales and scotland. I remember going to university in Sheffield in 1995 and it still having 25% unemployment and then there was Pinochet (and of course the stories of collusion that have since come out regarding loyalist terrorists, the hunger strikers, Liverpool council, Toxteth, Brixton, vCJD in Beef, educational reforms and the Yuppy boom (loads of money).

They were interesting times.

But in her defence, she got it right on AIDS and the Falklands, whilst the YTS was probably a good idea for the most part. Probably the greatest achievement was the response to AIDS.

* I wouldn't call her a homophobe - she voted on the liberalisation of homosexuality.

The good of the country, is not always the same as what is good for the people of that Country.

Latest example is the austerity measures, the individual will think they are crap I know I do, but it has to happen for the good of the countries economy as a whole. We simply could not have gone on as we were, oh and on the subject of money, you know that rebate we still get from Europe who was Champion for that cause? Ted heath? Tony Benn? Tony Blair even…..not effin likely.

Another mug who has been fooled by the debt defecit narrative. For another thread perhaps, but the country is no worse off than it has been for many many years. Tis just a ruse by the Tories to cut public services.
Even if we believe the lie, how come we were able to build housing and get the economy going again, when debts were much higher, post ww2?

Yes me too, 1967 - so you will also recall what an utter busted flush and shambolic state the country was in, she didnt have much to ruin - like I said, selective political amnesia

The one thing Thatcher doesnt seem to endgender on whatever side of the divide people sit is balance

Anyway - mentioning the miners strike like they were some crusading poor downtrodden salt of the earth types automatically kills any arguement stone dead, as does the moronic Derek Hatton and Liverpool City Council and using the people pof teh city to fight their class war

So dont want to get drawn on this whole thing as have absolutley no axe to grind with Thatch, which is at complete odds to my youth. She did good, she did harm, she was probably the last PM we had that stuck to principle - even if those principles were extreme.

I think the reaction to her death says more about the 'grave dancers' than it does Thatch and her legacy tbh

It's kinda telling I think that most of the individual posters on here and the bbs - about 70 per cent - I reckon, have her down as someone who did more harm than good.

Now nearly all of us old enough posters would have been in the better off South East during 1979-90. Yet still so many have her down as a negative overall.

Thus, It stands to reason that the Thatcher wasn't- good -for the -UK voices in the celtic countries, the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East - places that really did feel the full force of her economic policies - must be frighteningly higher.

We can't be all wrong, can we?

I'm from Wales, my father was a steel worker and my family had a history in mining. I think she was exactly what was needed, so she f***ed up a few things, the good far outweighs the bad in my book.

Powercuts, winter if discontent, British Leyland none of Maggies fault. She was a leader of her time, the world had changed but the Scargills, Red Robbos etc couldn't or wouldn't see it. She did and dragged us into the 20th century.

She believed in people being responsible for their own destiny, unlike the current blame everyone owes me something culture that Liebour left us with.

Good lord Nick, don't you know about the Marshall Plan?

Britain actually received more than a third more Marshall Aid than West Germany - $2.7 billion as against $1.7 billion.

Those Americans you hate so much paid for those council houses.

Of course she did unpopular things, but they needed to be done, she wasn't in politics for herself she was in it for the country. No leader since then has been as immensely proud to be British as she was.

And Kerm buddy try not to be so condescending, just because my opinions differ from yours, it doesn't make them wrong, ill informed, or stupid as you inferred with a previous post.

My wife's father was a miner and lost his job etc when the pit closures hit town. Even she can see the good work that you fail to see, and she would have more reason than about 90% of the posters on here who slag her off, (who never even came close to living under her tenure as PM) to not like the women, but not letting personel feeling get in the way, she can see that she did do good.

I wonder if all Maggie’s critics will be so scathing, when a money grabbing,lying t w a t t , war criminal like Blair dies ?

Come on me ole mucker - give us a bit of slack. Putting her up on an undeservedly high pedestal indeed.
