I see that the far-left media group, the BBC, now want an extra £15 a year from us although we hardly watch or listen to it anymore. I find it odd that the BBC expects their tax to go up automatically either in line with inflation or above. Is that how other taxes work? I know that the government debates how much money is required and then the Chancellor sets that out in a budget which Parliament then votes on. But I am not aware of any other tax that automatically rises without that process. Is that how the fishing licence works? I honest don't know. A lot of complaints about Newsnight facing cutbacks and the loss of their investigative journalist team. However that is a BBC decision they could have binned the gold plated staff pension scheme or closed BBC 3 which nobody watches. An odd decision then to cut back on what most would consider is a key part of their public service remit.

Even though the last straw with the BBC had been reached I delayed ditching the BBC license fee for a few years before I finally did it simply because they make it awkward. Despite that hundreds of thousands have stopped paying the licence fee. Those people are doing it for various reasons, not always political and news of this rise will only add to that. It's clear that the nature of public sector broadcasting will be changing. However, I don't see a change unto late in the decade....the incoming Labour administration won't touch it but maybe the Farage government after it will. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Dec 2023 2.38pm)

Indexed to the 1970s Morecombe & Wise Christmas show.....the record high number. Half the nation tuned in. And today, nobody watches linekar and everybody hates Eastenders.

I trust that the BBC will receive all it needs to carry on its essential work and there is no political point scoring attempted. I have no problem with any of its lightweight programming being axed, including recorded music, game shows and reality programmes. News, investigative journalism, science and culture are what matters. Losing the investigative work of Newsnight seems daft.
