I condemn any form of conscription where you are forced to risk your life for a war you don't believe in, that's Russian, Ukrainian or any other.

I heard a Russia “expert” (ex diplomat) say yesterday that the biggest internal problem that Putin faces is not from those protesting about the conscription but from the ultra nationalists who feel the army has failed them. Is this true? It's 100% this, Russia for the most part supports what Putin is doing, his biggest critics within his cabinet think he is being too soft & a partial mobilisation does not go far enough. Russia invaded Ukraine under the pretext of De-Nazifying it, releasing over 200 Azov Soldiers whilst simultaneously mobilising 300,000 Former Soldiers/Reservists is not going down well amongst his biggest backers. I suspect once these sham referendums are over Putin will be able to push ahead with full mobilisation placating his own cabinet somewhat.

Our media rather than tell people the real realities are over Russia, and what's realistic instead just get absurdities told to them like, 'Putin's ill' (relevant until you look into it) or that 'they are about to run out of missiles'.....or money: both proved rather overtly wrong. The talking heads that appear on news say these things and then get to disappear and no one says anything makes you lose faith....if you actually had any to begin with. Life teaches you that the demand and supply principle is just as true for media as it is in any other business. Essentially people want to believe in something (often because they are told to) and then they will have a demand for anything that reenforces those beliefs.....and they will ignore or reject anything that denies them.

Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Sep 2022 11.13am) I can remember back in the 1970's the media confidently predicting that Fidel Castro was on his last legs and any day now.. Tyrants seem to last for ever so I put no store in Putin looks ill until the Kremlin announces his death. Likewise whilst Ukraine has had some success on the battlefield I am still suspicious that Russia will eventually over run them due to the vast resources of men and equipment. They may be wasting it with poorly trained troops and leadership but sheer numbers will eventually win out unless a deal is done.

You would think this would be reason but the rhetoric has been so far away in the clouds and emotionally childish that the prospect of an actual deal with the mad and bad Adolf Putin seems about as likely as Liz Truss becoming his next girlfriend. Most don't realise the huge risks involved with the republics becoming part of the RF after the referendums. All of a sudden even if Nato/Ukraine won the Ukrainian war it becomes a de facto game of nuclear chicken with Russia. We need sensible voices calling for realistic negotiations and de-escalation and peace. But hey....everyone seems to believe in Hollywood endings and the tooth fairy....so what can you do.

Maybe preemptive strike would be the way forward
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

Since then they have done everything they can to terrorise and silence opposition and waged war on the ethnic Russians in the east. This was common knowledge before the war. It's just another Oligarchy/Kleptocry. Edited by Returner (21 Sep 2022 5.25pm) You answered the point on burgeoning and embryonic. It is a baby democracy in the hands of its installers and needs decades to mature.

Is this true? That seems to be the current western media story, although as it goes it is one that has legs. The anti-war brigade are currently a bunch of neo liberal academic types from the posh areas of Moscow and St Petersburg who may go out on the street with a placard and who can be watched, arrested and silenced. The pro war nationalists are a horse of a very different colour. They are actually capable of regime change. And not for the better. However, when the body bags start to come home in numbers, with no clear strategy or end game, things may change. Dissent may become far more widespread and varied.

Russia is drafting 1,000,000 soldiers not 300,000. Will be done in 3 waves.
