Well you know....two hours with a social and neo liberal and all that.

Nice people some of them but I had my fill of that teaching.

Social conservatives are far more straight and true.

I feel fine thanks. I set nothing up, you made a wrongful assertion.

At least when you are trying to defend the indefensible with me you aren’t being personal and horrid to other posters

Isn’t horrid a lovely word by the way.

Wow. So you don’t have any friends with different views than yourself?

What an interesting life that would be.

All round to Hrolf’s for a bitter cup of tea and a moan about the feckless young people of today.

Come on, live a little, I’ll take you into the singing section and you’ll get on the telly.

You'll feel better in the morning.

The bitterness all seems to be coming from your creed right now.
Out of the two of you, I'd invite Stirling for tea over you any day.
I'm not sure I could stand hearing all of your Walter Mitty career stories or how many people you have 'saved' this month.

Ok, so you're clearly being disingenuous, here are the total votes by party.

Clearly, the Tories got more votes than any other single party, but as has been the case for pretty much every elected Government, the combination of the rest outweighs the Tories votes received.

So you see you're as bad as the politicians you despise, using and twisting facts to suit your argument.

It's a weak argument at best tbh and exactly how the Remoaners would've played the Indyref2 vote should it ever have happened. They'd have wanted 4 diff types of Brexit and then on remain and then shouted that Remain won over the 4 other options...even though combined they may well have totalled more.

The difference between that and the election is that 3 or 4 versions of Brexit were still Brexit, whereas the multiple parties are all different and therefore can't be counted as a vote for anything other than their individual parts.

If you recall I argued that any confirmatory referendum ought to include no deal, deal and no Brexit with a single transferable vote. The outcome I believe would have been that we would have chosen the deal option which would have been the first choice for many and the second choice for everybody else. Thus enabling everyone to have a stake in that outcome and for the healing to begin.

The difference between that and what we have now is that the deal option would have been set into law and right now Johnson is again in hock to the ERG and Farage so that a no deal possibility is back on the table.

I have long argued that PR would produce a better form of government for us with all strands of opinion being represented and ultimately a more consistent pattern of progress established with the margins less able to wrest control. I also want to see less control of the centre over our representatives and more freedom for them to vote on what they believe rather than on what their party tells them to believe. Secret votes in the house is what would achieve that.

I actually have some sympathy with many of the arguements for PR but I struggle with this notion of secret votes in the HoC.

Surely our MP's have to be held accountable for how they vote? And that the current system allows for that to happen?

Or do you think it is healthy for democracy if an MP campaign on a specific manifesto promises but then fails to vote accordingly and in secret?

You would invariably end up with a situation in which MP's publicly proclaim how they voted whilst the numbers of actual votes cast do not then add up? How does that help anybody? All that does is destroy the little confidence that remains in our political system.

I get the entire notion that we elect representatives rather than delegates but surely there still needs to be a real and visible sense of assurance that comes with public voting?

Someone we know should move to Italy.

No Brexit, a country in the EU and PR. For someone who advocated so hard for remain, what's not to love?......Also they'll get plenty of the 'diversity' they advocate for in Rome.

As probably the only person on the site who has lived both in Wisbech (12 years) and Truro (6 years to date) I think I am able to give the definitive opinion on this subject. I much prefer Truro.

There are some nice people in Wisbech, just as there are everywhere, along with rather more bigoted, narrow minded ones than found elsewhere due I suspect to it's relatively isolated situation. The flat countryside appeals to some but I found boring and lacking in any real charm. Truro by comparison is delightful and the environment around Cornwall as a whole hugely more interesting. The local people are welcoming and friendly and the "incomers" proud to be part of the community. We get hundreds of thousands of summer visitors. The only tourists to visit Wisbech come to see where Tony Martin lived.
