Fine we need to know who was or wasn't in the flats,I agree.
But an amnesty why?

Would you come forward if you thought you'd be deported?

So as what was said earlier here illegally get caught in a horrific fire, and get a leave of stay.

Is that fair on the rest of the people in that area that need housing.....

Have a bit of compassion. With what they've been through.

As for those needing housing, there's nearly 2000 empty properties in the borough...

Other people's property, and I do have compassion for the people who are on a waiting list now.
Why should they be 're housed before people on the waiting list.

Compassion is one thing, overlooking illegal entry into this country is another.

This is just another agenda position isn't it?
Those wicked Tories won't grant amnesty to those poor people of colour.

Sorry mate. We need to send a message to illegals that coming here is not a good idea, not the opposite.

According to Jonathan Prtes, writing in 2015:

"The last serious – although extremely rough – estimate of the number of people living in the UK illegally was made in 2009, which gave a range of between 420,000 and 860,000. These are the numbers most commonly quoted, although Migration Watch and the Daily Express routinely round the number up to a million.

Interestingly, even the lower estimates imply that there are several hundred thousand people living illegally in London and that figure may well be too high. A few years ago the Metropolitan police started checking the immigration status of everyone arrested in London.

They seemed to find immigration irregularities only for a relatively small proportion, perhaps 1%. So unless we believe that irregular migrants are remarkably law-abiding compared with both natives and legal immigrants, it may be that levels of irregular migration are much lower than previously thought.

Moreover, most people here irregularly didn’t come through the Channel tunnel. Most estimates suggest that at least 80% are people who arrived in Britain legally and then overstayed.

If it weren’t for migration, the EU’s working-age population would already be shrinking
The “typical” illegal immigrant is a Brazilian who came here on a tourist visa and decided to stay and make some money working in a restaurant; or an Australian who arrived on a working visa and is now a gym instructor. He or she is not an Eritrean who hid in the back of a lorry – who in any case is quite likely to have a valid claim for refugee status."

For some reason Hrolf's posts tend not to focus on Australians, for example, and the inappropriateness of their presence here.

No doubt from now on ,we will hear him pontificating regularly on the need to make a priority of harassing and deporting one of the main illegal immigrant groups....the Aussies...or are they "different"?

As a professional landlord I have to undertake identity checks on all potential tenants. Many properties I let I do so myself without the use of agencies, for each of these I would suggest that roughly half the applicants are unable to prove they have a right of stay here.

From my own experiences I would say that there are huge swathes of people residing in London who live a kind of parallel existence to the regular community. I’m not judging them and I understand they are here for their own reasons.

I’m sure there are many Aussie over-stayers however these guys generally plan to go home, as opposed to those from Asia and Africa who plan to stay.

Hope all is well Legal

Tom

Why should they be 're housed before people on the waiting list.

Because they were nearly burned or asphyxiated to death in a residential building that wasn't fit for purpose.

As for empty properties. If they ain't occupied for at least 80% of the year, tax the f***ers twenty percent of the property value. Homes should be for living in. Not commodities.

By doing that you change the rules of the game. The players have to adjust.
