But as a commentator said last night, most 'hastily buried' victims of war are usually just chucked into a mass grave - not laid out neatly in rows in individual plots with a numbered marker.....

Quite and as said above for the media to hype this up as a latter day Katyn is shameful.

That scenario is unlikely not probable. Pure pub chat.

Is an opinion worthy of a "pub chat". Sorry, but no time for one today.

Our politics are close and generally our views align more or less. But Putin will not release huge levels of radioactivity into a neighbouring nation with a prevailing westerly wind blowing it into his own peoples faces.

He will not break the last post war taboo. That will be his legacy. Even the Chinese wont stand with him if he did (the khazaks have already secured a treaty of support from China in the event putin turns his gaze south). I would also be surprised if the military let him although I accept I don't know if he can bypass them.

And there is no such thing as a "tactical" bomb. There is only the bomb.

Tactical nukes are very much a thing. They would be anywhere from half a kiloton to maybe 50-100 kilotons. You'd be looking at a few hundred metres radius of damage in the short term for the smaller weapons. The US famously had a nuclear mortar. [Link]

Small tactical nukes are the UK'S current thinking on nukes.

Isn't there a neutron bomb? It doesn't leave residual radiation?

The neutron bomb is designed to kill people whilst leaving infrastructure. The basic principle is that on detonation, the bomb emits mainly neutrons at incredibly high speed, and gamma rays. Both will pass through most buildings and vehicles yet kill anything living within the area almost immediately. It sounds useful, but not sure how much the actual blast and radiation has been reduced. I don't think they're as refined as was theoretically intended.

The pulse of neutron radiation would cause immediate and permanent incapacitation to unprotected outdoor humans in the open out to 900 meters, with death occurring in one or two days. The median lethal dose (LD50) of 6 Gray would extend to between 1350 and 1400 meters for those unprotected and outdoors, where approximately half of those exposed would die of radiation sickness after several weeks.

So that’s all good then.

I was talking political implications of the use of nuclear weapons.

Yup I dont think there is such a thing as a good nuke.

I just hope that if Putin ever does decide to start lobbing nukes at the west ground zero is my home. I don't fancy surviving only to watch my skin and bits slowly drop off.

Sterling…. I don’t post that regularly but follow this thread and it’s comments closely and daily. I’m interested in the topic because it’s a big deal and half my family (although I’m not close to them) live in Kiev.

Generally, I agree with your opinions on most things, and you’re clearly an intelligent bloke, but I’m afraid you’re so off the mark with this. The way you conduct yourself against Wisbech suggests you have no proper response and resort to low level digs. For what it’s worth, I disagree with Wisbech on most of his centre/left views. If you want respect from passive HOLer’s, you need to post with more respect and up your game.

This war is simply about a deranged bully (Putin) trying to forcefully take land from a democratic and peaceful country in Ukraine. Any sane leader would focus on trying to make their country and people prosperous and successful. NATO are standing up to a modern day Hitler and so we should.

No one wants this war. If Ukraine/NATO/Europe accept it, then what country does Russia invade next? God forbid this war ever reaches our shores, but if it does, this is the sort of thing you fight for.

The Russian army don’t know what they’re fighting for. The Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and future. Good will win.

A part of me respects the sentiments but there are some reasons why my view isn't your view.

You present the war in goody v baddy terms, which is very much how our media have decided present it....it's no different to what the Russians are doing over there. I often find that while many people will freely admit that the media lie to them they will end up believing most of those lies and half truths.

If you had been reading this thread since it began you would know that firstly my opinion was very much a pro Ukrainian one at the start (which agreed with supplying weapons) to what it is now....which essentially is one where I consider this war a hot potato with no up side to winning even if that were possible.

The reason I aim barbs at WE is mostly because he continually wants to repeat arguments that we have already had earlier in the thread. I can't really be bothered to endlessly repeat myself to the same person only for the same points to be posted at me. Unlike him I don't see myself as on some kind of mission to convince people of a view, I have always come onto Hol to let off steam and just give an opinion. If I think someone is disingenuous then I'm not continually going to engage.

My view changed to basically Victor Orban's 'the war would have been local, but the West intervened and made it global.' As my commentary earlier in the thread shows my position altered once I looked into the causes of this war and just the sheer level of lying that has gone on.

As I said earlier in the thread the real victims of this war are the civilians killed and maimed for the hubris of politicians. I will respect any man who goes to war for their country while not always agreeing with the reasons why....some of those reasons have been lies fed to them....and in the Ukraine conscription has meant that many people have been forced to fight against their will.

You say the Ukraine is a democratic and peaceful country. However the coup in 2014, which forced out the pro Russian president wasn't democratic was it. That's what caused the war back then. Also the Minsk agreement which ended the fighting was broken by the Ukraine by shelling the pro Russian side. The UN recognised that...and that went on for years right up till the invasion....How much of that was you getting in our media?

Both Russia and the west have been meddling in the Ukraine for decades and all this goody/baddy stuff is a smoke screen. People like Biden's son have been working with their corrupt rich right up till a few years ago.....People have been sucking money out of the Ukraine for decades.

Russia is bad and so is Nato.....a plague on all their houses as far as I'm concerned. The sooner this pointless war ends the better.
