Sunak has lower numbers with conservatives than Truss did and Hunt's approval is even lower. The idea that they have 'a chance' is just the usual waffle from this wind up merchant. A guy who literally spends his time trolling conservatives. I mean, just who does he think is going to vote for Sunak and co?....The left? Centralists? This is up there with the idea that Mitt Romney could be the next GOP leader. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Dec 2022 7.11am) Which only serves to demonstrate how out of touch with reality many of them must be! I don't think the Tories will win the next election but they have put themselves in a better position by putting realism and pragmatism above dogma and idealism. I think there will be a hung Parliament. What happens next is another question but having a reasonably strong Tory element is important. They will be rewarded, albeit slightly, by the country as a whole for that. The kind of "conservatives" that are referenced above will still probably vote for them because right now they have nowhere else to go. I would welcome them having a new place. We could then see just how strongly supported this kind of approach really is. Who will vote for Sunak and Hunt? I will, as will many millions of others. Why? Because I am a traditional middle of the road voter who has no time for extremism. I see no hope, and little talent in Labour. Unless they dump the Unions and the left, they are a waste of time and that won't happen. So the only current Party who are capable of delivering what I believe in are the Tories, but only when they are behaving with common sense and compassion. Which is more on show now, than in the last few years.

Last night I was in conversation with right-of-centre Conservative voters who were expressing their support for 'Reform UK' and it is feasible that this party will gain a sizeable number of supporters from my wing of the party.

He's their man far more than he is yours or mine. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Dec 2022 8.07am) Midland is right! Your willingness to blame the "markets" for this is as nonsensical as blaming the WEF for globalism. Both are reactions to events, not the causes of them. The "markets" are not an organic mass which thinks and directs. That they now react better is not because Sunak is their "man". It's because our man is adopting a more sensible approach which has produced stability and predictability.

Fair enough, loyalty has nobility to it, though I'd suggest that it should also be a two way street because otherwise it's nothing but exploitation. Apparently, Reform are up to nine percent in the polls, neck and neck with the Lib Dems. They could take a lot of the right of the Tories with them, which would increase that considebly.....Hitchen's prediction may well come true. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Dec 2022 8.40am)

I hope it happens. The right need their own place. The Tory Party has long been a coalition and it's about time it was openly acknowledged rather than pushed out of sight. Then if we end up with coalition governments, which I anticipate, there will need to be responsible behaviour from it's members rather than the behind the scenes dog fights we now get.

When you stand on the edge of a cliff looking down at a boiling sea full of sharks, and no rescue boats in sight, it's generally better to retreat than join the ranks of the lemmings.

You continually make assertions and assumptions about others and yet are probably the person who most complains about misrepresentation. Truss was an awful pick from a poor option list. However I'll state again, what she did caused a tiny fraction of the damage that this country has been lumbered with. All decisions that you supported of course. I was also the patrol leader so as long as you did what you were told, you would be fine. I am not a cannibal. I don't eat people. I just bite lumps out of them from time to time.

Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Dec 2022 8.57am) You, and all those who are also undergoing this conversion, are, of course, completely missing the point. The damage this country is suffering is not because of Sunak and Hunt. It has been mitigated by them. What we witnessed during Truss's, thankfully brief, time in No 10, was only the tip of the iceberg that would have hit us, had she remained in office. The damage was already in the pipeline. It's now been held back, spread a little wider and delivered a little slower. The ship has taken a sensible new course to avoid terminal damage. Truss was mimicking Captain Smith with her belief that icebergs can be avoided. She was too busy trying to look like Thatcher to see what was obvious.
