The Russian Foreign Ministry has now said that if the United States decides to supply Kyiv with longer-range missiles, that they will cross the red line and become a direct party to the conflict. Once again, I'm extremely concerned about escalation and of this war being brought to my door.

The US is not, and won't become, a direct party to the conflict. They are doing what they have done many times in the past, and what we are also doing now, which is to supply a friendly country with the means to defend itself. There has been a risk of escalation from the moment Putin ordered the invasion. That the Russians are upping the rhetoric only serves to indicate how effective the support has been. When the alternative is to cave in to a bully and seek to appease them, then you must trust that those making the calculations have weighed up the risks and know what they are doing. It would not surprise me if channels were now being used to find a way for Putin to claim a victory and call an end to it. The time seems right. Xi's meeting with Putin today looks as though it could be critical.

I was led to believe today that Xi is outwardly supportive of Putin but internally there are rumblings about Ukraine and a certain dissatisfaction with the whole saga. As to the truth in this I’ve no idea however I sure hope so and equally that this applies pressure for an resolution to be reached… as to what that may look like I can only hope for the best, the announcement of a ‘de-nazification’ of Ukraine perhaps??
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Just like when you waffled on about Nato being entirely defensive and my answer was that all that mattered was missile response times your rhetoric means nothing to practical outcomes. If Russia say the supply of longer range missiles means war with the US...with whatever consequences that means then that's what they said. Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Sep 2022 11.10pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Sep 2022 11.10pm) As what anyone says, you included, doesn't matter at all, the waffle belongs solely to you. Rhetoric has been the stock-in-trade of Putin since day one. He only takes action against those he perceives as weak. Making these noises now doesn't change anything. The plain fact is that neither the USA, nor any Nato member, is involved directly with this war. They have been very careful to draw a line and stay behind it. Russia can choose to regard anything that curtails them as unacceptable, and issue all the threats they like. That's what bullies do. Nothing has changed, and only the weak run from bullies. We need to continue to face him down. It's always been dangerous, no-one denies that, and Putin possibly being on the ropes makes it a little more so now. Which is why the Chinese could be the ones to broker a peace. Nato is entirely defensive. Providing assistance to Ukraine, so they can defend themselves against aggression, is completely a defensive act. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (16 Sep 2022 2.11pm)

I would have thought it would be madness to send any missiles over the border. If you want to transform a poorly motivated army just attack Mother Russia so they are defending their homeland.

The US and NATO are the instigators of the war!

BTW the mass grave just discovered is the main headline in the news. On this I am with those shouting partiality. The report implicitly links this with Katyn and the like. However it is war. Civilians and soldiers will die. As occupying authority they needed to do something with the bodies; and there seemed no attempt to hide the ground with hundreds of crosses. Obviously those people would not have died but for the war so there is culpability. However it was not Katyn.

Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Sep 2022 11.10pm) I don’t know how this simple statement/threat can be argued against and I don’t think anyone on here does either.

Russia have claimed that when the Ukrainians re-entered the cities and villages they left during this offensive that pro Russians have been killed and reprisals have taken place. You wouldn't have had this reported in our media of course. Anything negative to do with the Ukrainians has long since disappeared from our media. Early on I read justifications for it so I'm pretty cynical about all of it. I condemn anyone who kills civilians on any side killed in this utterly insane deliberately prolonged economically disastrous war. No one wins this, all of us lose, aside from the weapons manufacturers. Edited by Stirlingsays (16 Sep 2022 3.51pm)
