On the experience point; it's relevant that both Wharton & Mainoo have always played alongside a more experienced partner - pairing them together was what I expressed concern with. I also think we are downplaying the step-up in pressure from regular league football at a high level, and playing internationally at a major tournament, particularly in a struggling team. Having said that, I think they're both brilliant, and would gladly see either of them start, but I think it's either/or alongside Rice.

Agree, will be the same sort of game which worries me a bit. Gordon & Mainoo have to play against another low block - it's incredibly worrying if Southgate hasn't figured that out by now.

Before the Italy final, I thought he was atrocious for Englad. That Final was his best game by a long way, and he was the best player on the pitch up til that point he got subbed. He's been no better than 'decent' ever since, and has nailed down the DM role as that is what he played at wetSpam.. and through lack of other options. He Doesn't play the same role at the Arse (and has looked better for it) AND we have more options now. I've said previously that Wharton and Mainoo could form the basis of our midfield for the next 10 years, but dropping them in it in a knockout stage is probably a step too far, two steps for Southgate. I hope the next man in at least considers this as an option.

Can someone please explain how this works. Prior to yesterday s games England were playing the Dutch. We are now playing Slovakia when it appears the Dutch haven’t moved positions

Disagree, i said it before, Rice is the problem, drop him. Then, Wharton/Mainoo or even bringing Bellingham back deeper would/will be far better. Totally agree. Gordon Bellingham Foden Palmer , Wharton Mainoo, Get Stones to push up into midfield like he plays at City. Get all the others to play as they play for their clubs.

Gareth has stated today and I quote...... "I am the problem" Imagine if a league manager said that.

Interestingly, very few of the big teams are playing well.

Pre tournament, all the chatter was about England's inexperience in defence. Now every pundit and outlet is singing Marc G's praises. All Palace fans knew he would be absolutely fine.
