It's about the executives taking control of the clubs they manage as opposed to the players controlling the clubs. I know the argument goes if it suits all parties what's the problem. If every player had a release clause then a contract is not worth the paper it’s written on as basically it’s a one year rolling agreement and if someone likes the player then they have to wait no time at all and more importantly don’t have to negotiate as they know the applicable amount. It’s yet another easy way for big wealthy clubs to mop up the best talent, like it isn’t twisted in their favour already.

In Spain these clauses are compulsory which really suits Barcelona and Real Madrid who can consequently buy any player they like while setting unaffordable prices themselves.

Sorry, I completely disagree. I wish him nothing but the best and feel privileged, as a Palace fan, that he's worn the shirt for as long as he has. He should be ambitious, for, imo, he deserves to be playing in the best competitions in the world, such is his talent. It's players like him that make me love football, the beautiful game. I'm pleased he's not flash, too, as it happens. Just talented. For me, he is the best I've ever seen at Palace, even above Atillio. Good luck, MO, and best wishes. Edited by Glazier#1 (22 Jun 2024 11.16pm) Unleashing my inner Willo, I garland your post with approbation, Glazier. It has been a privilege to watch him in a Palace shirt and I wish him the very best in the rest of his career.

Spot on, players come and go, managers, chairman, owners also, it’s only us fans who are here 30/40/50/60 years. Even players you could consider loyal like Jim Cannon, Julian Speroni and Wilf are only around for a brief time compared to most supporters. Man alive....yeah over forty six years for me.

Yea the come and go , a bit like a night out in Amsterdam. I'd be more worried about Glasner leaving he was only signed up on a 2 year contract , players can be replaced but a manager like that we cant do without . 100% Glasner is the jewel in the crown

I 100% don't care what he does if he leaves Palace. I support the club, not some greedy individual. No loyalty = no loyalty.

Loyalty in football can be mainly consigned to the history books because ever since the PL sold its soul to the money men, it's only ever been about money and career progression like most other jobs. If we want to attract real talent like Olise then we can expect to have to include release clauses in the contract. There's no reason to cut off our noses to spite our faces by refusing to provide such contracts. Someone mentioned Ward as a loyal servant, and whilst I accept that his Christian faith probably has something to do with his loyalty, I would proffer that Ward surely knew that he was well-off staying with a struggling to middling PL club given his limited footballing ability. As several posters have said, only we fans are loyal - everything and everyone else is transitory. We move on.
