Big Brother actually derived from socialism and that is highly plausible and insightful when you look at liberal/socialist attitudes.

Well more by post-war London, and the Soviet Communists, rather than socialism, which Orwell regarded as a force for good. Orwell's 1984 isn't really about socialism or communism, its about totalitarianism and how power controls and the end result of that power, is the desire for power over more and more aspects of life (and death), including power over reason, until the very idea of thinking for yourself is a crime punishable by death.

Yevgeny Zamyatin's 'we' is my favourite dystopian novel. Preceded and influenced both 1984 and Huxley's brave new world.

Arrogance and lack of self awareness even if true arent arguments for liberals favouring big brother. Indeed one of the few principles that the party didnt rat on by going into coalition was in opposing attempts by May to increase BB and the surveillance state

The problem isn't the idea, of liberalism, its the idea that Liberalism is 'the truth'. Same as anything, arrogance, ignorance and power over others is a terrible combination that never ends well. Sadly its usually the others that pay the price.

You read that on Wiki.

You are still on Enid Blyton.

No, just highlighting that it is right wing not a left wing government that has introduced a bill that allows access to everyone's Internet data.

Most people would have worked that out, funny that you needed it spelling out.

Well put. There can be no ownership of truth.

Do you really believe that surveillance hasn't been going on for ages?
Counter terrorism measures have become necessary because the enemy are among us.

Who shall we blame for that?

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

Its good, and Orwell certainly regarded it as one of the best novels of the 20th Century, and without it, there is no 1984.

But I'm going to go out tangent, and actually state that my preference alternates between 'V for Vendetta' and 'The Handmaids Tale'. Although its tight between the three.

Wiki wasn't around 30 odd years ago when I first read the book.

In fact, I'm sure I discussed the book with Jamie on here a few years back.
