QPR gonna get around £8 million in the sell on clause of Sterling going to Man City.

Maybe they will lower the asking price for Austin just a tad.

From the interview I referenced above, QPR are going to get absolutely nothing like 15 million for a player in whom there is (perhaps surprisingly) little interest. I suspect they're making a lot of noise because they want to cash in on what they perceive as their most valuable asset but unfortunately for them, there are very few buyers and absolutely none at their asking price. Supply and demand...

Austin will fetch them south of 10 million in the end. However we want to interpret it, he's not yet a proven Premiership goalscorer (i.e. over more than one season), he's had a serious injury in the past which has caused him to fail medicals, and his personality isn't, shall we say, pristine. Put it this way; he's a colourful character and these are things clubs do look at more and more these days. If you were investing millions in an employee, wouldn't you look into his personal history first?

The reality is that 6 million plus Mariappa and Campbell would be a shrewd bit of business for both clubs but I suspect this deal appeals to us as much to get a couple of unwanted players and their salaries off the books as it does to bring in Austin, who is clearly not our prime target. When you look at the team Pardew built at Newcastle and the sort of players he's signed (Cabaye, Souare) or are rumoured to be interested in here (Remy, Ayew), Austin really doesn't fit the mold.

Austin is overrated imo..What can he offer us that Muzza cant do ?

18 goals?

Last season.

Glenn Murray

866 Prem minutes played
7 goals
124 minutes per goal

Charlie Austin

3069 Prem minutes played
18 goals scored
171 minutes per goal

Stretching Murray's goals per game ratio to the amount of minutes Austin played would have seen Murray score 24 goals and that's rounding down. Not saying I don't want Austin but to suggest Murray can't do it is unfounded.

Charlie Austin actually scored 18 goals last season. Murray didn't even if you add in his games at Reading.

Be that as it may, I don't think you can categorically say that Murray can't score 15/20 goals in a full Premier League season until he's given a proper chance which he hasn't been so far. I'd love us to sign Austin or Remy and either would automatically become first choice striker but if we don't then I have faith in Murray's ability based on the goals he's scored so far.

I agree. I think, given a full season Murray will get 15-20 BUT Austin would probably get you 20-25. He got 18 in a poor side last season. We Have Cabaye, Puncheon, Zaha and Bolasie providing and the wingers are only going to improve in their final delivery. The question is- would an extra 5-7 goals justify a spend of £15m? If we could predict what that would mean in terms of league position now then you'd have an answer but as we can't I think the only reason you would shell out that kind of cash is to stop the likes of West Ham, Stoke, Swansea or Southampton buying him- they are the teams we need to be finishing above of we want to finish in the top 8 and he will get you goals

The thing about Murray is that he's not a fast guy but he does tend to be in the right place at the right time. As such with the likely improved delivery from Cabaye et al I reckon Murray may well be the man for the job.

Would the extra goal justify the outlay? probably but I'm far from convinced we need to spend that much when we have FFS.

Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!

I will keep posting it - don't want him - Murray is as good in my opinion and he is free to us!
He also works bloody hard and "gets it"!
Loves Palace and has been on the journey.
No to Austin - whatever the price!

I agree with this. Murray is already suited to our team style and has the ability that Austin has but just older.

Would rather see someone come in to join Murray that has the ability to run at players like Aguero/Suarez (just as an example) style which I think Remy fits far better than Austin.

The more I read about this the more I'm convinced that we should be looking elsewhere- injuries have been mentioned, as has attitude. I think we need to be looking for someone as different from what we have as possible- we need options against different teams and able to vary tactics accordingly. Remy certainly offers something different, as does Rhodes for me. Yes Rhodes is more of a risk but if he does fulfil his potential (and he has always scored goals) we have a striker who will be attracting the top 6. On top of this, his cost plus wages over 2-3 years is likely to be far less AND he's younger.
