No, it's largely about Wis trying bend reality into a shape that fits into his whimsical view of things.

I remember the case. I don't think that they closed their business,
they turned their house into a religious respite centre allowing them to insist that guests abide by their beliefs.

It was in Marazion which isn’t too far from where I live. I remember it closing and seeing it boarded up. I believe it has reopened and by whom and as what I am not sure. I’ll take a look next time I go there.

No they weren't.
The gay agitator complained to the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland that he had been directly discriminated against on the grounds of his sexual orientation, and the Equality Commission supported him in filing a discrimination lawsuit - which they eventually lost - hurrah.

In my opinion, that of the trial judge, the appeal court and many others he had been discriminated against by the refusal of a sub contractor to complete their work because of a personal objection to something they had no right to be concerned in.

It was only lost when the Supreme Court held that the discrimination wasn’t direct in a strictly legal sense. Hence the need for new legislation to clarify.

This was a technical victory. Not a moral one.

So let's get this right. A production company can hire a black woman to play Ann Boleyn and anyone objecting to this historical abuse gets called a 'racist' and has to tread carefully. But if an 'ethnic' restaurant doesn't want whitey serving up their grub that's totally fine?

Man, this country is frigging hilarious.

Well, the good news is that, whilst this dispensation was originally included in early anti discrimination law on the ground of ‘authenticity’ it appears to have been removed. Similarly there is no such exemption in the USA although there such laws only apply if you have at least 15 employees.

In my first posting overseas we had about 25 people in our division of the company that were being housed in the group company labour camp (the group employed maybe 250 people)
We (the management of our division) visited the labour camp, the conditions weren't great (Overcrowded dorms / poor sanitary etc) so we decided that our 25 employees would be better served by us renting a number of villas (houses) near the business & providing them an overall better living experience - it was possible to rent 6 or 7 bed villas for a reasonable amount & allocated members of each villa by their nationality so that each villa would house people more likely to get on with one another - we had 2 Indian villas, 1 pakistani, 1 Pilipino etc - Overall it worked well & when recruiting new staff it allowed us to bring in higher skilled employees because we were offering better living conditions - obviously it meant that when recruiting we had to be selective of the skills we were looking for & the nationality required that would fall into line where we had appropriate bed spaces - when we as the senior management group eventually moved on (as generally happens in overseas postings) newly recruited managers (non western) came in & the accommodation package was dismantled with everyone being moved back into the labour camps -

Didn’t the UAE only implement proper anti discrimination laws in 2015 in any case?

They were charged with discriminating against him because he was a homosexual. Clearly they were not doing that. It was so clear that it is hard to not come to the conclusion that the original judge (who had form in other matters) and the appeal court were more concerned in pursuing a political agenda than making an objective judgement.

Did you picket the house with a pitchfork and burning torch?

Yes they did - This was in Oman in 1995 so long before then -
Even now if a company over there (in that region) wants to hire a specific nationality or gender because it fits with the existing staff or its seen as particularly appropriate to suit the business / industry etc, its still relatively easy to do so, they just advertise the position without any reference to nationality or gender bias & then choose someone from the applicant group that fits in with their original plan.

Yes, I'm not keen on people being harrassed for personal health choices within a family. Stateside even Trump is speaking more sense than some about the all or nothing views on the subject.

It is somewhat insightful I agree. He's a bit of a political jackhammer when he needs to be, and was obviously trying to appeal to a base that laps that up for a time. Now that he's not headline news, occasionally he says something that actually resonates more widely and hits on a truth. As in, clearly he's largely right in what he says here.
