Funny, because you weren't so keen when Trump got elected.

I wasn't happy he was elected, but I didn't question the result. I accepted it. That doesn't mean elected leaders should be exempt from ire.

Well arguably they had an election, and the representatives all had a vote, and it was 2-3 to move it.

Hilariously, I find it astonishing also that people give such f**ks about a statue. I don't really get this revering people who basically did their job (in this case badly) as the 'heroes' rather than the people who actually did the fighting.

Its like the statue of Bomber Harris, did he fly a Lancaster bomber over Germany, risking flack, enemy fighters and god knows what else, no. He gave orders - f**k that guy - he had it easy.

Redskins time...

You haven't been happy a lot lately.

2 Tory election wins, Brexit, Trump. Oh dear!

At least Jeremy kept his job and that useless French bloke won. Cheer up.

It always brings a smile to my face that the "you lost, get over it" brigade are the same people who want to preserve the statues of civil war runners-up like General Lee.

My personal opinion, if anyone cares, is that they should never have been erected in the first place.

That's freedom for yer. Sometimes it leads to dumb choices.

Elvis recorded that in 1972. The BBC last aired an episode of the Black and White Minstrel Show in 1978. Just because more people were ignorant (dictionary definition - not pejorative) of such racism at the time doesn't make it ok now.

However, if you want to look back in time for relevant examples of southern pride, there once was a time when the southern states in America broke from the Union because the Union had moved to make illegal slavery. At the time, I'm sure they were very proud to be marching and fighting under their own, new flag to maintain their heritage of owning people.

Well, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it but personally I don't go with the idea that Elvis or the BBC were ignorant. They just saw these aspects differently to you.

Elvis for example sang, 'If I can dream' which pretty much shows that he was very much aware.

I don't think the BBC have ever been ignorant...even when they had the black and white show...I can just about remember it...elitist for certain....liberal, for certain.....a giant pain in the arse sure... but not ignorant.....These were different times with different perspectives. I'm closer to theirs than yours.

It's a tricky one for sure.

If you read about the first Peloponnesian War at the outset there were agreements about how it would be conducted....a kind of fair play....set of rules and all that.

Then the reality of war happens....brutality takes over and brutality wins over reason and reasoning.

When your child dies under the rubble the cry goes up for vengeance.....try being the guy talking to the mother about a responsible response.

If you take one of mine, I'll take five of yours has always been the way.....that's what war is. No full on war is won by proportionality....never happens.

The point is to avoid war but to be ruthless if you have to fight it..women and children..non combatants should always be off the table if possible...But context does matter, people who look at demonising the victors have to see the context.

But yeah....what we did to those cities and the humans in them was very bad. I don't ever want to be the person who has to make decisions about this kind of thing.

When you start pulling down statues that you disapprove of, it is just a step to listing books that you will burn. Should we destroy all the film footage and photographs of Hitler? Trying to destroy or change history is a Stalinist activity. After all, the logic is exactly the same as that which ISIS employs when it blows up ancient buildings and statues that is disapproves of.

The US pulled down statues of Saddam Hussein but I don't recall that being seen as Stalinist or for that matter when Russia took down statues of Stalin it wasn't seen as Stalinist either. Us British destroyed the Summer Palace in China in 1860.

It was one of the country's most beautiful palaces and we did it out of spite...and because they wouldn't buy our drugs. When it comes to destroying buildings as acts of terrorism ISIS are amateurs compared to us. Just take a look at Iraq.

So you think pulling down statues is a bad thing then?
