The three main reasons that people change to a vegan diet (in no particular order) are 1. For the environment. Vegan food uses maybe a tenth of the land/water/resources that it takes to feed a meat eater. The reduction in greenhouse gasses methane and CO2 is huge. The increase in biodiversity enabled by a massive movement away from farmland used for animals is also significant. 2. Animal welfare. 59 billion animals are kept on farms for meat eaters. Many of these animals live miserable lives in appalling conditions. Think huge, packed, concrete floored sheds. 3. Health. Fruit and veg are good for you. Jermaine Defoe credits a vegan diet for keeping him at the top of his game well into his 30's. Serena Williams does too. I love the taste of meat and fish. I am a foodie, I enjoy every meal. But I also like animals, I like to stay healthy and I like to know that I am doing my bit to maintain a sustainable environment for the future of my family and the rest of the human race. So I choose veganism. My wife and I are also good cooks, so our food tastes good. It will also help to get food to people who need it. We currently can feed billions of animals for the meat industry yet people, even in this country, are going hungry. It takes more than 2,000 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef and only 25 gallons to produce the same amount of wheat.

I'm not convinced that lobsters suffer and as far as animals go I won't touch battery reared chickens or Danish pork and bacon. I am lucky enough to live close to Packington organic pork farm and every day I see the pigs and piglets outside enjoying life and whilst ultimately they are going to be killed (humanely) they still have a better life than supermarket pork. What does surprise me is that the price differential between a tasty joint of pork from the farm shop and the cardboard rubbish sold by supermarkets is very small

There isn't really a humane way to kill an animal that doesn't want to die.

The Humane Slaughter Association has all you need to know about animals up for the food chain.
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

There is no "humane" slaughter...whether of animals or people...deliberate killing is slaughter full stop. I'm not a vegetarian...but I don't kid myself its somehow ethically squeaky clean because I only have steak and chips where the cow is killed "humanely"

There is a video entitled 'slaughtering pigs in a humane way' and the most telling thing is that although it is 3 minutes long it doesn't actually show the slaughter process, only the pigs being led to slaughter which is pretty scary anyway. [Link] (slaughtering pigs in a humane way) There are plenty of other places where you can find the actual slaughtering process on video, most of it quite terrible.

Would you really mind replacing them for the meat ones currently served at the Arthur Waite Canteen? I love going to Selhurst, I would love to see only healthy, environmentally sustainable, cruelty free vegan food served at the ground, like Forest Green have.
