The ambassador only has 6 months left so if Johnson is going to PM he could rotate him out without having to explain why so I don't see a plot to oust him is even necessary. Maybe there is no end game! at the moment I just think its mischief making by someone because they can.

Well he's gone now. According to the BBC Johnson's failure to publicly support him was the final straw, BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said: "Failing to back Darroch last night was the first major act of the still hypothetical Johnson premiership that led to his resignation. However I think her colleague Nick Bryant was more accurate. "It wasn't his more colourful remarks on Twitter that really ended Sir Kim's time, but Mr Trump's public announcement that he would no longer work with him. The effects of that were felt immediately. There was a banquet that Sir Kim was immediately dis-invited from. Next, he couldn't attend an event with minister Liam Fox. It was clear he was being frozen out and for an ambassador access is everything. Without it, it's impossible to do the job."

I just suspect the Ruskies are showing how much they can breach what would be supposedly secret communications.

Something similar happened under Labour. The UK embassador to Uzbekistan was forced out over reporting that the Americans were torturing people. The Americans didn't agree...

People are pointing the finger at Boris for the Ambassadors resignation, this is complete nonsense. Boris has not been in government for a year so cannot be accountable for this. If and when he becomes PM he will have to make or confirm lots of appointments, at that point he would have had to make a decision until then it is up to the May government. Normally when an ambassador is in trouble the person to carry the political can is the Foreign Secretary oh wait isn't that Hunt. Why is no on calling for his head.

Not implicated in the dubious direction the EU project is going down....Yet a friend both to it and the US. It makes sense for us to slightly favour the US over the EU but not too much. An ally who isn't publicly criticising is much more likely to have the ear of a president than one who publicly argues and then has zero impact. Edited by Stirlingsays (10 Jul 2019 7.26pm)

The Government then decide what diplomatic stance to adopt, and he follows it, whatever his personal opinion might be. Johnson in failing to support him has caused questions to be asked about his own commitment to diplomacy.

And that personal opinion had nothing to do with diplomacy so clearly he dropped the ball and has now been subbed!
