[Link] According to The Athletic journalist Matt Woosnam, Hodgson was asked about the decision not to bring on Mateta and said: “Benteke was doing an excellent job & plays a role for us defensively, especially from (set pieces) I didn’t see what JP could do to make a difference in us seeing the game through as we did” Strikers are there to predominately score goals, any defensive qualities are purely secondary issues. If this doesn't illustrate the need for a new manager, I don't think anything will.

Strikers are there to predominately score goals, any defensive qualities are purely secondary issues.

No I’m going to make a judgement call based on what’s done in the transfer window or once we’re safe, whether that be a new manager as well as additions. You do realise we aren’t a massive club, we don’t sell out every match, and times and desire by fans to attend isn’t going to return to how it was for quite a while. The question really is does the £550-£650 matter more than the tv and other revenue. I’d guess it doesn’t. Well that’s fine, in the short term. I’ve endured it for quite a while now, but now’s the time to improve it a little. I’m not expecting us to be pushing for Europe or sexy football or any of that rubbish. I just cannot watch us at home prepared to not attack or even have a pattern of play going forward. And if we’re so good at defending, why are we a shambles defending corners?

Last season quite a few of our games were virtual sell-outs with attendances around 25,500. Even with Mr Hodgson in charge next season, I certainly don't expect to see a preponderous of empty seats.

Even with Mr Hodgson in charge next season, I certainly don't expect to see a preponderous of empty seats.

This is why I thought Mateta didn’t get picked, but makes me wonder why Batshuayi was loaned in a 2nd time. Batshuayi was good in a team with RLC as well as Zaha. It was pretty obvious he wasn’t much use in the middle third or with nobody close enough to him. But he was available and cheaper, which is the first requirement before if he fits the football needs. However, I think there’s some truth in the defending first requirements of all Roy’s players. Always has been. COYP

This is why I thought Mateta didn’t get picked, but makes me wonder why Batshuayi was loaned in a 2nd time. Batshuayi was good in a team with RLC as well as Zaha. I'm not sure about that Willo. Home form has been Historically awful. I can see fan protests and then smaller attendances. We already had a training ground banner and 400 pages of Roy out: that's probably representative of a large body of fans. Several thousand at a guess. They weren’t sold out, and unfortunately it doesn’t take much for a few to become a few more. There also isn’t thousands locked out the way we are. But tv money is worth vastly more. I thought this season might be the season I renewed and paid but didn’t attend all matches but Covid changed that. Unless things change I can’t imagine looking forward to any of them.
