Only a total moron, of which there are sadly too many in this country, would take seriously the tedious wittering of the Labour opposition, particularly around anything to do with the economy. Labour is a spending, big state party who messed up each and every time they have been in power. Fortunately, that hasn't been too often. What would Labour do in power when they have no money to waste? How will they, ahem, fix the NHS or pay off our debt, or improve the country's infrastructure without hugely increasing taxation? The answer is that they will achieve nothing in power because just one term of a Labour government will almost certainly remind enough people why we never rarely get a socialist government and why the Tories have been the least bad option so often. I long for an alternative party who will seriously address damaging immigration, energy, crime, self sufficiency and the loony media, but I fear that would it all be too late to save Britain from its inevitable fate. Is not the Tory claim to be the party of secure economy a little out of date? And a party that is right of that fills me with even less confidence. From one populist lurch to another, an embarrassment on the world stage and economic policies that will make Truss look effective. But I agree with you on labour. What a choice we have.

Nobody could have fcuked the country as bad as this lot, and not only financially- but reputation and corruption- anybody- anybody- would do better- they need 20 years in the wilderness, but as you said- not many options- but thats no reason not to give anybody else a try!

Some happy memories there HK. Reeds, I bought my first LP there,The Rolling Stones, Let it Bleed. I was offered the choice of mono or stereo There was an invisible border between each side of the station ( do you remember the old station building ?), the two sides divided by the pedestrian tunnel. A little further round the South Circular was the Unicorn darts factory. Back in the day was really nice area to live, parks everywhere.

Unless something dramatic comes in the budget, such as a realisation of the damage caused by brexit, a plan to increase the UKs potential growth output, then the 'tough road' looks to be a cul-de-sac. I suspect it will be all pain for no gain.
I still think Truss' economic problems were highest rate of tax messing about, two year energy bill protection rather than through the winter first then see how prices are doing, and the stupid bankers bonus issue. Most if not all the rest is what we will have and Labour supported. Her attempt to throw red meat tho the idealogues was juvenile.

I have to say that the Labour leaders support of Johnson's disastrous brexit deal was the worst decision imaginable and fundamentally ignored the opposition's duty to oppose the government. To think that the opposition was even whipped to support it defies belief. Now he is reduced to 'making brexit work' noises when he knows the whole thing is not working, and when he should have been holding this whole mess to account. And what can he say, when he supported it?
Again we agree, whether or not you support Brexit, Starmer has done what is politically pragmatic. Remember almost all the Labour MPs back remain in the referendum so it's not a change of policy.

I went back about 10 years ago after a 30 year gap and was surprised at how short the subway is - as a kid it seemed to go for ages.

Might be nice to have a thread for how things used to be in South East London. Many fantastic things, main problem then was the train connectivity. No Underground south of New Cross, in those day no overground services from South to North other than by changing at Waterloo or Charing Cross. I was quite amazed to find decades later It was possible to get a train from Honor Oak Park to North London. No doubt public transport network in London has improved so much last 20 years or so Edited by HKOwen (15 Nov 2022 11.38pm)

The cinema building was a beautiful piece of design, Deptford had a fantastic art deco Odeon I think. Horniman gardens magnificent with the park opposite with the paddling pool. I remember when the nutty council attached signs to the lamp posts along the South Circular declaring "Nuclear free Lewisham".
