I have never witnessed Alexander-Arnold deployed as a wing-back.In actual fact I have no recollection of Liverpool deploying a back three formation. Speaking to some gentleman prior to the commencement of the tournament, he stated that TAA spent much of his youth career in M/F, he was never a right-back in his formative years.TAA has of course, on occasions, played in midfield for Liverpool. TAA looks a tailor-made wing back imho, Southgate has run out of ideas and seems out of his depth. Done a grand job up till recently but this is one tournament too far - Bellingham and Foden are getting in each others way and GS has shown no sign of being able to solve this problem. If Mainoo starts in the next game then either Foden or Bellingham will have to be dropped but GS lacks both the vision and bottle to make such a decision. It's strange because he started in 2016 with 3-5-2, reverted to four at the back, then went 3-4-3 to match up with the Germans in the last Euros but now he's inflexible and rigid. I'd play Jude to partner Rice like the last world cup, Foden as number 10 and Gordon on the left. I know I'm one of 60 million England managers but it's got to make an improvement to what we've seen so far.

The team improved when the substitutes were introduced so perhaps there are some 'Positives' to take from the game. Yep, I thought we improved slightly every time we made a sub - if we had a manager who was open to changing his mind, that should mean at least 2-3 changes before the next game... we'll probably name 10 of the same starting line-up, with Trent or Mainoo replacing Gallagher. I've been a defender of Southgate but I just don't know what he's seeing this time - our problems feel quite fix-able and he just seems unable or unwilling to do it. Yesterday was the chance to look for new solutions in the squad before the stakes increase and we wasted it continuing to do exactly what we've been doing so badly for the last 2 games.

Last night was as close to being a fee hit as we could've hoped for but still no real change. Risk aversion is one thing but this is something more than that.

Should've been hauled off yesterday - Southgate hasn't got the bottle to drop him in the KOs, so he should have at least sent a message and pulled him out of that s***show yesterday. Totally agree. I would also drop Foden, Kane and Rice. Never going to happen though

That's where the Denmark game was so disappointing - win that, and last nights -as Spains was the negith before - was a true free hit, and playing a second string would have been possible (though I still dont think GS would have changed anything). The last chance was HalfTime. but at 0-0, he was never gonna try anything drastic. I was incredibly surprised he pulled Gallagher so early. didn't think it was in his Dna to make early changes.

It’s as if he is scared of the media or FA so will not drop the “ big names” even though they are out of form ( or can’t be arsed)

Foden is clearly an incredibly talented player and is phenomenal for City, but he's now got 37 caps for England and I'd struggle to think of one good performance. He's got 2 goals in his last 34 for England, scoring against Wales and Scotland. Palmer looked more of a threat in 20 mins yesterday than Foden has in 270. How many opportunities do we need to give him?

Southgate of course would have known that a win would have guaranteed finishing top of the group and I suspect he was not in "Have a look at fringe player" mode, deciding to select his tried and trusted more experienced players. We all know that 'Plan A' was not working accordingly with both England and Denmark drawing 0-0 in the later stages of the games he decided to introduce Gordon and Palmer both inexperienced at this level. He of course brought on Mainoo at half-time as Gallagher failed to deliver and a change was necessary. this is the most worrying part, despite all of the evidence of the first two matches, Southgate thought that yesterday's starting 11 was the answer. Don't expect major changes for the knockouts, it's just not in his nature. The only major changes will come if his hand is forced e.g. Foden having to go home for a family matter, another player injured or such like
