If this proves to be true then it is an absolutely monumental clusterf*** from the club. Not only because that release clause is half of what it should be (and I don't believe for a minute that we can't get these players without release clauses, Brighton seem to be able to). But also because if we knew it was there this entire time and haven't acted to source a replacement early knowing that he was probably off, it's ridiculous. Ayew has improved and Schlupp is fine but let's be honest, going from Zaha / Olise to Ayew / Schlupp is like shagging Jessica Alba one night and Pat Butcher the next. I'm still hoping it's somehow untrue but this is shocking news for the club otherwise. Politely disagree with that. As Midlands Eagle said if we didn't agree to the release clause at the time of signing then another PL club would have done. The weeds don't always get away with release clause, look at the relatively low value that Alexis went for to Liverpool, that was almost certainly a release clause. It's just not had the publicity that the Olise contract has had. By the way - nowt wrong with Pat Butcher!

That’s the only way to look at it. The vast amounts of money being raised by these major clubs is making them more and more predatory regarding other clubs talent.

Well tbf, he did have a good game in the U21's according to the match thread(i didnt have access, but, now resolved), Roy has stated he doesn't want JRS to go out on loan, yet, so would make sense. Don't know about anyone else, but i'd be very happy for this 'saga' to be concluded quickly, so the club can move on. JRS was good but understand Trialist B was POTM.

Quite right. We should have insisted on a much higher release clause so that he wouldn't have signed and gone to another club instead If I remember correctly we were the only club in for him at the time. If he felt the time was right to leave Reading and we were the only serious bidders we could have set a bigger release clause or better still offered him a cut of any future transfer fee instead. That would have kept him happy and protected us from losing him for peanuts.

The club would have known its highly probable he was going. Lets see if the club had contingencies in place in this eventuality and we're not going to just be reactive with no clear plan.. Losing Zaha and Olise in the window is huge. their goals and assists must be replaced We'll do it all again next summer with Eze. Dougie needs to earn his corn over the next 2 weeks and before next season thats for sure.

Fair point about Alexis but ultimately when you see Brighton selling player and player for huge amounts and then we've lost Zaha for free, Olise for half of his worth and Eze is into the final two years of his deal so will likely depart next summer for a pittance as well, it is just very annoying. Especially when there seems to be very little in the way of incomings.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

I would like to congratulate The Athletic on their stunning, 100% accurate reporting on this issue. It's been so reassuring having them tell us he has a release clause, oh actually he hasn't, oh actually Palace have removed or raised it, oh actually it's 35m still but has magic conditions, oh actually Chelsea without Europe can just activate it when they like. Now that's reporting you pay for.

To anyone who saw the match, where did Trialist B, play. He looked right footed but was cutting in from the left wing. Very quick feet and composed and could have had another goal. Bright seemed impressed. Former Spurs youth player that was released.
