Tobias Ellwood, Chairman of the Defence Select Committee said :

"If Kyiv falls, history will ask why the West did not do more and why Nato's hard power deterrents - the one asset Putin fears - was not better harnessed."

Leaving aside whether Nato should intervene with hard power, and where that escalation could lead, is it even possible for it to do so?

No Nato country is under attack. Nato could not act without USA support and I cannot believe that in today's divided USA there would be any mood for such a venture.

My conclusion is that Putin will get what he wants in Ukraine, whatever that is, and we will then settle down into a new cold war. One in which the Nato members with borders to Russia will see them reinforced, Russia ostracised by the west, with travel restricted and cut off from the financial systems of the world. We will face energy shortages, although I expect ways will be found around sanctions. We will accelerate our search for alternative energy sources. Expect fracking to be a major industry in the coming years.

Russia can survive for a few years, but sanctions will bite and Putin could come under pressure. He won't live for ever!

It's a game changer though, which will add big problems to the big problems we already face. This is going to do nothing to help us overcome the climate emergency.

We have some friends living in Taiwan, a British guy married to a local lady, who are now seriously thinking of coming back to the UK. The dominoes are tipping already.

China starts the pandemic which weakens the Western world.
Two years later one of its close Allies - Russia - starts to invade parts of Europe - hmmm - let me think.........
Just listening to Nato it is we will defend ourselves but not Ukraine except in sanctions.
Listened to a Tory MP on Times Radio earlier - Adam Holloway I think - who said we should do absolutely everything now in the way of sanctions regardless of the consequences - he is ex Forces and spoke very calmly and well and I have to agree with him.
If it is on a blog it is a good listen.

And what is wrong with Putin doing what he thinks is best for the Russians? The people he leads?

And perhaps a warning signal. If those of us on the Right, who are defined as being nationalist, are deemed to be siding with a foreign power then what does that tell you about the state of the country we are meant to be the 'flag-shaggers' for?

I don't admire Putin because he is Russian. I admire him because he actually leads. Puts his own people and their interests at the top of his agenda. Does what he thinks is best for those who elected him to lead them.

No, you should ask what it says about you and your mentality, rather than your country. More of note and genuine concern has clearly happened in your own head than here for you to feel the way you do, and indeed for your enthusiastic support for the likes of Putin. I view your comments as little short of an the attack on a democratic nation and indeed the Ukrainian people.

Funny how these little boy lost racially geared 'brother' types are always the worst advert for their belief system going, and more readily support using the full force of the state to shut down and attack than anyone, while simultaneously playing the victim. Ultimately, you're one authoritarian supporting another against a peaceful democratic country. Your gushing, delusional support for Putin and Russia, combined with constant attacks on Ukraine is the take of the untethered. Another led down pointless online garden paths and dead ends to the detriment of both himself and others.

How unusual for him to be leading the client state.

He has chosen the path of bloodshed and aggression and the world is on the precipice of a major conflict.
The West might be unified and talk of major sanctions, and indeed introduce them but these do not deter the maniac.I have read that NATO has 100 planes on "High alert".

Russia is a nuclear state with an arsenal that could send us sky high. We need less bellicose talk.

Ukraine is not a Nato country and there needs to be far more calm. Am I prepared to die for the Ukraine? No, however if Poland were invaded I guess history will rhyme again, but I seriously don't see that happening.

The sanctions you refer to will hit us just as hard if not harder....Russia are a major link in both the gas and food markets.

It seems we are much more closely aligned on this than on almost any previous subject.

If we can agree on this maybe we could offer ourselves as mediators? After all it must be a small miracle!

If you think Putin's claims of genocide are true, you are either a moron or evil - or perhaps both.

Putin would never have gone ahead with his invasion if NATO had granted Ukraine emergency membership. Force is the only thing he respects. As Lenin said: "You probe with bayonets: if you find mush, you push. If you find steel, you withdraw."

There is mortal danger all around.

If Putin succeeds in annexing Ukraine where does that leave Poland, Romania, Finland and the Baltic states ?

Putin will he be eyeing these adjacent ex-Soviet enemies and satellites with relish ?

We cannot fight him in Ukraine but if he attacks a NATO member this could start World War Three

His mental state is very worrying, and I am very concerned about the future.

His action may act as a green light for China to invade Taiwan with consequences in Asia as well as in Europe.
