Social media is a strange thing. People say things that I doubt they would say in person. I don't think Palace has a larger anti-gay fanbase than any other club. It's a shame we're (and Hol) being portrayed in this way to the wider world. Freedom of speech is very important but that does not equate to there being no impact- on other people's feelings or your reputation. I'd agree that Palace fans are no more anti-gay than any other club. If any other club were Brighton's arch-rivals they'd be getting the same focus as us now. But that in no way excuses the chanting of homophobic songs at matches. It's just wrong. Plain and simple

Plain and simple I'd go further and say we're better than many clubs but you're right, there is a balance between freedom of speech and the impact of it. I'm against 'hate speech' being something that has any legal implication at all, so in actual fact I'm 100% pro free speech. However, people often forget that freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of consequence. Those projecting hatred can expect others to do the same, or to be told to do one, or will get banned from a forum or a game or whatever. If you don't play well with others, it's more often than not reciprocated. It's all about the hateful fringes really. That's where there is a problem. The vast majority just engage in good hearted banter and no-one gives a s***.
