Austin is overrated imo..What can he offer us that Muzza cant do ?

Got a few more years in the tank but that's about it. I'd go no further than £10m. I'd also hand them Campbell/Bannan bearing in mind it'll bring down our wage bill on players we don't need, and be attractive to QPR as they have a sell-on cash % clause with Burnley.

But, yeah, he's not worth the £15m cash sum.

Last season.

Glenn Murray

866 Prem minutes played
7 goals
124 minutes per goal

Charlie Austin

3069 Prem minutes played
18 goals scored
171 minutes per goal

Stretching Murray's goals per game ratio to the amount of minutes Austin played would have seen Murray score 24 goals and that's rounding down. Not saying I don't want Austin but to suggest Murray can't do it is unfounded.

I would be extremely pleased with Remy or Austin. But...I really think that Murray would do fine if he got a good run and stayed fit. Same with any out and out goalscorer, though, to be honest. Do not want to lose Muzza but don't want him to be playing second/third fiddle to someone else just because we've paid £15m for them: he deserves much more than that with the magnificent service he has given to Palace.

As has been said on other threads we need two players who can compete in each position. Muzza and Austin competing for the 'No9' role looks pretty good to me.

What I like about Austin is his attitude to all this, he's being professional and getting on with things, not like Sterling.

For me, that is as important as his ability to find the back of the net.

I have a gut feeling that we will get either Remy or Austin to join us. Pardew and Parish are lining up one or two more quality signings.

Austin would probably be the better out of the two IMO, would fit into our squad well, and also still has years to come. Remy probably at his peak, if not past it somewhat already.

I always felt that our league finishing position would say a lot over the transfer window. The way things went last game of the season we had some incredible luck/and justification to get tenth place.

Our defence is solid, our midfield is solid. It's now just adding a striker and we are good to go!

Now only if Zaha and Bolassie can start to improve a bit in terms of delivery of final ball etc.

Charlie Austin actually scored 18 goals last season. Murray didn't even if you add in his games at Reading.

Be that as it may, I don't think you can categorically say that Murray can't score 15/20 goals in a full Premier League season until he's given a proper chance which he hasn't been so far. I'd love us to sign Austin or Remy and either would automatically become first choice striker but if we don't then I have faith in Murray's ability based on the goals he's scored so far.

I agree. I think, given a full season Murray will get 15-20 BUT Austin would probably get you 20-25. He got 18 in a poor side last season. We Have Cabaye, Puncheon, Zaha and Bolasie providing and the wingers are only going to improve in their final delivery. The question is- would an extra 5-7 goals justify a spend of £15m? If we could predict what that would mean in terms of league position now then you'd have an answer but as we can't I think the only reason you would shell out that kind of cash is to stop the likes of West Ham, Stoke, Swansea or Southampton buying him- they are the teams we need to be finishing above of we want to finish in the top 8 and he will get you goals

What if those 5-7 extra goals win us the game 2-1 or 3-2 or even an equaliser and gain us extra 10-12 points?

I would say that is momey well spent.

As I say, this is the unknown factor- Austin's 18 last season weren't able to keep QPR up and we have no idea how important (or not) those 5-7 goals might be. Also, I'm not overly convinced that Austin is as much of a provider or a handful as Murray so you need to factor that in as well- that's why it's so difficult to know if it's money well spent or not
