If you have people posing as extremists, they will incite racial hatred. How many other similar pieces of 'investigative' journalism have there been, stoking hatred?
So investigating Islamic forums isn't allowed? If there is no story to be found then there is no story. If there is a story then the Mail can publish and if their report is found to contain serious lies then I'm sure the Muslim council are well within their rights to take them to court....And if they had a case I'd support them. However no group should be 'off limits' to investigation, especially a group that conservative estimates have said has 500 young men fighting aboard for an anti democratic extremist group. Racial Hatred? I see no claim by anyone that picks on all Muslims. This is just a ham fisted hack who's been found out. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Jul 2014 5.58pm) Stroking? Aboard?

Funny how all us non-religious types manage to get on OK without entering to inter or intra-sectarian based mass killings, but citicse religion and the proverbial "all hell breaks lose". Why not cancel all relgion?

Edited by matt_himself (07 Jul 2014 9.13am) Technically Pol Pot is among the most genocidal of Genocides, not necessarily for numbers but for the percentage of the population (over half the adult population). I wouldn't generally say the genocide is a particularly religious trait, historically purges, inquisitions and the like were conducted to political purposes rather than religious ones. The justification was simply religious sectarianism.

For what it's worth: Everything in moderation would be a good watch word for a sane planet...but we humans are prone to taking things too far and seeing things in terms of absolutes, we pervert logic, science, even 'common sense', for our own ends; which usually only amount to greed and lust motivated by ignorance, fear of 'the other' and our impotence in the face of natural forces and our own mortality.

We set our arbitrary measures on what is 'extreme' on either side, then kid ourselves that there is some mathematical mid-point we can work out and say that's what we should do. Take your point about Colonialism and the Native Americans. I assume you didn't, but someone could suggest the extremities on offer are: no Colonialism, or extinction of a whole race. Thus the moderate position may be said to be moderate Colonialism, but were China to march troops in to Parliament and declare that we were now under their benevolent rule, I imagine the reaction on HOL would not be 'oh well, at least they acted in moderation'. Back to the thread point, I find the whole thing f*cking depressing. It's like Islam is some new idea which has only just found credence and is now going to take over the world, rape your kids and punch your wife in the face. It's been around for millennia and, like other ideologies, had and has some nutters connected to it, but actually on the whole it's also done a lot of good and the only person suffering from you pissing your knickers over it is yourself.

Travelling around Turkey and Andalucía I couldn't help but be struck by how beautiful Islamic architecture is and what clever fvckers they were with their irrigation, artwork, science and writings when we were still knee deep in mud and living under straw. Pity some of them still live in the 15th century mentally. Edited by Kermit8 (07 Jul 2014 11.58am)

Thanks for that.....but I think you've gone a touch extreme on the moderation....if you see what I mean! The real point is that we've had instructive teachings about loving and caring for each other from Buddha, Christ, Mohammed etc. yet have managed to turn them into creeds of hate and exploitation.

We all have our beliefs, which we convince ourselves will improve the world, reach a utopia, or unify mankind. Be it religion, socialism (as for me), or science, but I think we all know, somewhere inside of us, that the world will always change, we will never reach a perfect society, and that just as movements which seemed impenetrable before have fallen, so too will our dreams and aspirations one day crumble to dust. One day Capitalism will seem archaic and ridiculous, but so too one day will people look back on whatever replaces it in a similar way. We like to pretend there is some sort of positive progression but actually we still have war, death, hatred, poverty in abundance. Yeah we can go in to a shop and choose from 25 different types of hat we wanna wear, and yes we can get to Manchester in less than 3 hours without the need of equine assistance, but have we actually progressed at all since we left the cave mouth, or do we just kid ourselves in a silly game? Forget the muslim extremists we have the old dears and codgers, mums and a few lairy types within Unite Against Fascism to worry about. The Far Right with their xenophobia and hate do not like them, do they? Wonder which side our WW2 soldiers would have been on given the choice? Edited by Kermit8 (24 Jun 2014 9.58am)
