To my mind "smoke and mirrors" does't necessarily imply subterfuge, it implies the use of illusion or of hiding something, but hiding things that are not public knowledge is perfectly good commercial practice; and after all, he that hath a secret to keep must keep it a secret that he hath a secret to keep.
