I was stunned at a response that Roy gave at today's press conference

Q Are any of the players who are coming close to the end of their contract - are their talks ongoing to extend their stay?

A I haven't had any contact or discussion with either the chairman or with sporting director on that subject.

It's quite possible that behind the scenes agents are talking and the club are talking, but as far as I know there's no definite steps being taken either one way or the other. But I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of talk is going on in the background.

I think that there are a dozen players whose contracts expire at the end of the season and the manager doesn't know who's contracts will be renewed and who will be allowed to leave.

That's precisely what I'd expect. We have adopted the director of football model, so whilst Roy has the title of Manager, he's essentially what the continental clubs always called a first team coach. He picks the side and the tactics based on the group of players the club provide him with from one season to the next.

He's said as much every time he's asked about transfers.

I think Roy probably thought the question was taking the piss / the journo being tricky given the speculation about his own future.

I doubt it's that complicated. Hodgson has made it clear on previous occasions that he's not involved in player contract discussions or who is coming to, staying at or leaving the club etc. If journos what answers to those questions they should ask DF or SP.

You're probably right. I'm the world's worst cynic but share your view that he has very limited involvement in recruitment.

I didn't think that he had made it so black and white in the past. If that is genuinely the case and Dougie Freedman and Steve Parish are making the hiring and firing decisions I expect that will put off some possible future managers including Sean Dyche as what decent manager will want to put his team building in the hands of a failed Championship manager and a marketing man

Yes I agree. I find it odd that any manager would agree to this sort of situation. Any vision you have for building a team is destroyed before you are even started, unless of course you are entirely happy with the team you inherit.

But at the end of the day, it’s results that keep you up and most clubs cannot afford relegation. If Brighton go down, will that justify the tippy Tappy football?
Having said that, I do feel that Brighton are possibly 2 strikers away from being a very good team

Agreed, similar situation with regard to potential buyers imo. Parish will not relinquish his power

I have no comment on the article I just thought it made interesting reading on someone else’s perspective.

Apologies didn’t think you agreed or disagreed with it. It is interesting and tbf Brighton do play entertaining football albeit mostly before the final third.

Any new manager will of course have to accept the way Palace operate, or at least negotiate the exact role they are happy with, if Palace can accommodate that.

I'm sure different clubs give their managers different levels of power and authority, but I doubt anyone gets to build their own team really. Dyche fell out with Burnley last summer when the club declined to renew deals for a few out of contract players he wanted to keep, or to replace them. He was quite public about it.

Even pochettino at spurs made the point clearly. He got a new contract in which his job title was changed from coach to manager, then later asked the club to change it back as he was so frustrated at having so little power to make signings.

There won't be another old school Clough, Shankley or even Coppell again. Team building is a club matter largely.
