Additionally as Spidey pointed out earlier how will passport control and baggage reclaim work if you have to keep 2 metres away from each other I have a feeling that there will be couple of superstition remaining that in fact adds not so much value to avoid risk but impact our daily life..

Because ultimately it makes very little difference. Look, I promise you I am not seeking to be contrarian for the sake of it but the reality is that you cannot close down a modern countrys airspace for a disease like Covid-19, at least for any preventative purpose. There is a French Aircraft carrier where out of a crew of 1600, 1200 have tested positive for Covid19. With 50% of them asymptomatic. It is impossible to prevent it spreading. And with the level of infection in the UK, it makes no difference. That ship sailed months ago. Isolating is about slowing the spread, not preventing it. With the harsh truth being, and one that no politician could ever admit, you want more and more people to become infected now. We have the medical capacity to cope with the small % of people who require hospitalisation and you probably want to ramp up infection rates now, not decrease them. Yes that moment is coming, but it isn’t supposed to be for a few weeks. With hundreds on a plane you’re risking a whole plane full of infected people landing in England. It’ll only take one on the plane to infect virtually everyone. They won’t all be wearing FFP1,2,3 masks keeping 95% of particles out. They’ll probably be wearing cloth masks keeping 10-20% out and there coughs almost in, or no masks. There are a lot of mixed messages. 5th test to be confident there won’t be another spike. Well without a vaccine you can’t be confident but I get that it’s better said than not. Now there are flights happening when the numbers aren’t down to what they’re aiming for and with the repeated comments by Matt Hancock. The 7 day rolling average of new cases (in lockdown) has just started to fall. It hasn’t fallen at all. It’s just a few less per day than a week ago. In a few weeks it could be well below what it was. Chart here. [Link] ‘ From May 1, flights will resume from Luton to selected airports in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Portugal, Spain and Israel. Owain Jones, Wizz Air UK's managing director, said: "As we restart selected Luton flights to provide an essential service to passengers who need to travel, our primary concern is the health, safety and well-being of our customers and crew.’ I’m all for releasing the lockdown but not individuals or companies to make the decision and causing a free for all. And why are flights from Israel essential? Maybe there’s loads of nurses flying to and from Spain and Portugal. I don’t know, although I doubt it. But Israel? Seriously? I’m getting rather frigged off with people deciding when it’s over. I’d rather it continued for just a bit longer so there’s less spread with everyone cooperating and then we repair our country and keep vulnerable people inside.

It’ll be like the veg or pasta aisle in the supermarket, checkout queue at best, and most there will be in low risk groups. If you’re vulnerable and flying around you’re taking your own risk. The trouble is if you’re the unlucky few that get it or get it bad and in which country or island not equipped for treatment. Edited by Rudi Hedman (27 Apr 2020 10.23am)

These ongoing flights. This is obivously missed task by government. There may be rounds of debates for failure of testing numbers & PPE but this one was no-brainer. True that puppets in WHO officially said travel restriction is not helpful in early February, however at least no putting a ban from suffering countries was a failure. It is clear that milestone for virus spread was the flights. However, now 2 months have been wasted already, not sure how it can help further. It is now only a conflicting case like Spiderman mentioned, you can not travel to see your daughter but someone else who does not have residency in UK can travel thousands of miles and hang around from airport to his hotel or home destination.. Singapore banned everyone who is not citizen / resident to enter the country. Fo eg my colleague who was temporarily in UK - who has work visa in Singapore- stuck here because he can not go back. That - to me- also is an excessive decision..

Just got round to listening to Stirling’s link. The first thing the guest falls down on is saying the lockdown was too early and we should have waited for confirmation the NHS was overrun. I’m afraid it’s too late by then. He also says the only thing used then was ‘’dubious computer modelling.’’ ‘’We now know the nhs wasn’t overrun.’’ That’ll be because of the lockdown, nurses and doctors back from retirement, overtime and nearly every other appointment cancelled. Not because nothing in the NHS changed. They then use nurses making Tik Tok videos as evidence they aren’t seriously stretched and everything is hunky dory. The guest, Hector Drummond, his pen name, then gets more sensible talking about his experience in risk/benefit analysis and the trend of handing all say over to virologists and epidemiologists. Valid point about the civil service doing what it likes. The different scenarios may have a low probability on the high number of deaths, however, they drift away from the initial point they made that the lockdown was to stop the nhs from being overrun. This was on 12 April so their viewpoint is gaining more traction, but they cannot be sure it wouldn’t be overrun and at the beginning they suggested we should’ve waited to see if the NHS was overrun. Again, too late, and you’re postponing and cancelling other treatments. Agree on the left wing herd points which I heard him and Lawrence Fox discuss. Funny hearing Delingpole refers to left wing think tank Grace Blakeley as ‘the fit bird on tv.’’ A bit unfair saying that’s the only reason she’s on tv. Add that reason to bring too right wing for why he isn’t on tv. Agree on the point made questioning why should we drop everything for people who don’t have any responsibility for their own health, but not in the initial period they’re talking in. He does return to the lockdown being to save the NHS on 44 mins and raises the question on whether saving a few lives is more important than saving civilisation. They don’t classify what they mean by civilisation but I see it as responsible to the many millions more people over the deaths that’ll come from an indefinite lockdown until what discovery. Their point on why didn’t the government do lots to deal with this before if it was deemed to be this bad. They didn’t go any further on this. No talk of China hiding the problem, how South Korea and Japan dealt with it through experience that we don’t have. Nothing. If anything we didn’t do enough when Italy and Spain were weeks ahead of our experience. Agree on the keeping airports and borders open and it suiting people close to the decision makers. Good point on there always being Sh1t politicians, including just before we went to war with Germany and they were effectively declaring war or marching into and claiming ownership of neighbouring countries. And then good point against a lockdown until a vaccine, which is very economically irresponsible and one I got really concerned about a week ago, but just turned out to be medical people or anyone on tv atm wanting to air an opinion.

Agree on a lot of this, apart from Covid being the same as the flu. The rate of spread of covid is the concern. Flu has a shorter serial interval (the time between successive cases) and therefore spreads more easily. COVID-19 has a higher reproductive number, meaning infected individuals pass the virus onto a higher number of people. His point about testing and getting people back to work. That’s going to be a long process. Think how long it’ll take testing 100,000 a day here. Edited by Rudi Hedman (27 Apr 2020 2.37pm)

It is worrying because these doctors are getting themselves involved in what are essentially political decisions. I am forced to wonder if they have a MAGA baseball cap in their lockers. If, for the sake of argument, their statistics are accepted as fact then their conclusions aren't, in my opinion. This virus is not like the flu. It is much more contagious but even more importantly we don't have a vaccine for it. Without taking the measures we have the health care facilities would have been overwhelmed and many more deaths resulted. It's only because those measures were put in place that the doctors can report their statistics. Without them things would have been very different. Of course more people are dying who have pre-existing conditions that increase the risk. That's totally obvious and to be expected. C19 is what tips many over the edge but it is still the cause of death, whether or not these doctors want to regard it as so. Some of those people might not have lived much longer anyway, but the fact remains that C19 was the final straw. They are quite right to be worried about other health issues being made worse by our response to C19 and this needs to be addressed. Not though simply by abandoning the good work that has been done so far. The vulnerable will need to continue to be protected until they can be vaccinated. Everyone else will need to practice social distancing to keep the infection rate within manageable limits. I think their presentation could easily spark a bad situation in the USA. I hope it doesn't here although I see no prospect of the government agreeing with their conclusions.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Some of the airlines are suggesting they will leave the middle seat free when they re-start. However I thought if someone sneezed or coughed the moisture drops went many feet so if someone at the back of the plane sneezes people towards the middle and will get it. So not sure keeping the middle seat free will help in that case. We all know that this is just a ruse to avoid refunds. If you don't fly they won't refund you - as it's your choice rather than flights being cancelled.
