Trying to imagine this world where immigration from only certain European countries has been allowed. Naturally everyone looks the same, but thinking of all those things that would disappear around us. No restaurants on the high street from other cuisines outside Europe, your local Indian and Chinese takeaways gone, businesses with American and Asian roots gone because people haven't been able to emigrate to the UK to expand and grow their businesses. Inventions and technological advancements that have been down to people coming to study in the UK's great universities. No influence from any other cultures permeating our society - how much poorer our music, films and art scenes would be without people from different cultures mixing and creating something new out of it. All the people that have fallen in love with someone from outside Europe would never have met that person. In my close friendship group alone - my best man at my wedding wouldn't exist - Dad was born in St Vincent. My mate's Australian wife wouldn't have been allowed to come here so that hasn't happened. Same with my mate and his American wife. I'm also intrigued how this 'European only' policy would have worked with respect to British Empire. Do we just pretend this never happened? The British Empire is a huge reason as to why modern Britain is as multicultural as it is. It's the reason why huge swathes of the globe speak English and want to come here. Walk around any city or town in the UK and the evidence of the Empire is overwhelming. How should we have approached this in your grand vision of how Britain should have done things? Britain is and will always be a multicultural nation. We are magpies when it comes to taking parts of other cultures, languages, food etc. and it is all the richer for it. Interesting comments about the British Empire! The left have been trying to trash its legacy over the years, but when it suits, it’s fine

For some reason we as a nation seem to shy away from discussing it properly, warts and all.

I think you are right but a sensible discussion has to work both ways. Unfortunately these days, it seems to be a taboo subject.

I am not sure why it's such a taboo subject - it happened, it's part of our history. I think one thing that Germany have been able to successfully do is come to terms with what the Nazis did and acknowledge it's part of their history even if it's not particularly comfortable (NB - this is not me comparing the British Empire to Nazi Germany before anyone starts ) And 4 weeks today! Mildly crapping it ha (but very excited)

Edited by DanH (22 Mar 2021 10.44am) 'No restaurants on the high street from other cuisines outside Europe, your local Indian and Chinese takeaways gone' Kind of amusing that you start off with that one. As Douglas Murray said, 'thanks but we have the recipe now'. This idea that you have to be foreign to cook a good curry is bizarre. Apparently you have an economics degree, so if these outlets are popular then Europeans people would provide them. But I really have to mock this simplistic notion that...people in Poland are really missing out in life because there aren't enough curry houses. Bizarre. Next point: 'American and Asian roots gone because people haven't been able to emigrate to the UK to expand and grow their businesses' Oh you mean those businesses that would have been European businesses instead employing Europeans.....Why are we supposed to care about a lack of foreign owned business? Do China care about the lack of European companies or do they actually restrict them?....Are their leftists in Vietnam lamenting the lack of pakistani takeaways? Again, bizarre. 'Inventions and technological advancements that have been down to people coming to study in the UK's great universities' Before mass immigration the British led the world in this field. Israel for example is a country (and an ethnostate) with less than 15 million people and leads the world with the number of Nobel prizes. Success in this field doesn't require an influx of foreigners....Besides why is it ok to deny non European countries their right of development using their best minds in technological development? There is no reason that collaboration can't happen anyway....Nope this is a non point. how much poorer our music, films and art scenes would be without people from different cultures mixing and creating something new out of it. ? The answer to this is similar to the last answer. Firstly all of them would be replaced with our own artists and secondly we don't need them here to enjoy their input. 'All the people that have fallen in love with someone from outside Europe would never have met that person.' Again, this is bizarre reasoning. How is this worst than the European they would have fallen in love with instead? The Europe friendships instead. The father who was born in St Albans instead of St Vincent. Again, I don't imagine anyone in Poland is sitting around lamenting the loss they have because their friends aren't from different cultures....Instead they are very proud and celebrate their own. As for your point on the British Empire.....your points here have been answered many many times....Yet here you are putting the same points across. Ok, once again. The British empire was for the gain of the British. We had and have no obligation to those within the Empire other than what we decided for ourselves. The action of giving people access to the British homeland was a disaster for the native British. As a reward for giving a home to foreigners we get attacked as 'racists' (really) Errrr....How was that a benefit again? If the British in the fifties could see what was going to happen there would literally have been non stop riots. Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Mar 2021 11.24am)

Willing to give up so much of everything that is here now just to have people the same skin colour as you. Bizarre.

Once all your false contentions are answered that's all you have. And once again, I can change my skin colour under a tan machine. It's a dim argument to misdirect from the point. Do people make this argument to the Native Americans who lost their lands to the Europeans......'What's up Tonto, got a problem with the Lone ranger's skin colour'? Again, I reckon you must hand out the teas at your place. Your arguments (if they are yours) weren't exactly hard to pick holes in.

So what is it, other than skin colour, that other European countries have over the rest of the world? You think you're being oh so clever 'picking apart points' (which weren't btw - that was just you offering your opinion) but you haven't offered up exactly why it is you wish for this European only utopia.

Sigh. I don't care what it is, or what anyone else thinks about what's better or worse about European countries or Britain or wherever. The fact is that this is the land of my ancestors and hence my heritage. My position is no different to the Tibetan position, the native American position, the position of all the nationalists in India and Africa who won back control of their own countries from European colonizers. Yet you think it's because of melanin. I know that this makes it easier for you to process it all but you really need to educate yourself.

No Dan, he was answering lamentable, illogical justifications for mass immigration. And again with the skin colour thing. Do try to stop being so dim.
