Winter fuel allowance for pensioners cut. Unless in receipt of pensions credit. Let’s hit the poorest to fund above inflation pay rises for public sector workers. Talk about levelling up ! I think it is the right thing to do. It is absurd that the likes of Alan Sugar were in receipt of the handouts.

Pension credit is deliberately fixed above basic state pension to discourage claimants. With the two child benefit cap it's very clear whose side this lot will be on. The wealthy, especially Reeves banker friends. A statement Osborne would have been proud of.

How many in the middle that will have to make severe adjustments to their winter heating? They are the category that will be affected the most. It might have been better to keep the allowance but reduce it (by half maybe), but the cynic in me says that the traditional Tory voter needs to be reminded how misguided they have been when voting.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

The OBR will bear out the shortfall I think, the public did not appreciate Hunt's NI give-away they smelt a rat and it contributed to the rout of the tories. So the incoming chancellor should reverse the cut and restore financial competence I agree. But she boxes herself in with a promise to not increase any taxes, in which case she cannot do so, thus lumbering the country with the failed Hunt give-away they voted against. And the people who can ill afford it end up paying for it, are pensioners and low earning families. I saw her coming, when I saw she had a banking background. A dunce.

But he doesn’t have to take his State Pension and if he doesn’t take his State Pension then the system should be able to identify that he doesn’t take the Winter Heating Allowance too. One should trigger the other, so there should be a common sense solution already in place. It seems your argument is concentrating on the small percentage of ‘rich’ people potentially getting the payment rather than the bulk of those in need in the bottom half of those in the middle.

He has paid for his state pension in National Insurance contributions, he is entitled to it. There should not be fuel allowances at all. People in need of benefits should get them through the benefits system.

Orpie you may have jumped in a bit quick I’m afraid. I reckon that tax is a coming with it being the tories fault! It always was going to be going up. That has been obvious for some time and would be true of whoever was in government. I said just that well before the election. No party will tell the whole truth prior to an election if the news is bad. They fudge. Both major parties did. It’s not all the Tories fault. Putin invading Ukraine isn’t their responsibility. Nor was the pandemic and the heavy strain it put on our, and the world’s economy. Some was though. Brexit was their fault. Something that could, and should, have been avoided by being braver in facing down the threat from UKIP and putting country before party. Truss was their fault. Allowing the membership to choose the PM and not the elected MPs was a crass mistake. One that looks like it’s going to be repeated.

It will impact me. As it should. I anticipate my income as a retired person to decrease quite significantly in the coming years. It won’t impact my standard of living, which is modest and affordable. It will though impact the inheritance I will leave behind me. Better that than tax the young or needy.
