Very good interview with Marc on Sky Sports News. Think he would be very happy to stay with us.

A bit of a curve ball, but when one reads what MG has to say about the way he lives his life as a committed Christian and as the son of a church minister, I believe there is no way on Earth he would ever "refuse to play" or otherwise fail to honour his contract. So that possibility can, in my opinion, be discounted. Wifey went to convent school. I could tell you stories ......

If they accepted below what they perceived to be his value then it sets a dangerous precedent. Conversely, show a tough stance and when clubs turn up asking about Eze, Mateta and Wharton they know they can't pull the club's pants down. I imagine this will come down to whether Newcastle have any other serious alternatives. If not they will probably end up bending and paying close to what Parish wants. If he's still here come 1st September I imagine he'll get a bumper new deal and I'd be more than happy with that. The Olise money will have dealt with any possible PSR issues and there'll probably be money in the bank for January if needed.

I understand we want the best price for Guehi, and i would be disappointed if he didn't leave, because as our key players get more and more attention, the key is keeping the key players and tying them down, and keeping Eze, Wharton, Mateta, Muñoz and Andersen are these players, a club our size has to give up the Orange cream to get the Toffee penny

I have taken Steve's stance to be 'We will have/are willing to sell but will ensure it is at the right price'. Again, for me, this is a realistic acknowledgement of both the nature of football and football players. I can accept that, as I'm assuming SP does, so long as we don't get the raw ends of any deals. If Guehi is destined to go so be it but we'll ensure our financial benefit is appropriate and move on. There's no point keeping hold of players who don't want to be here and assuming that won't affect the team/performances, it will. Equally, we shouldn't look to just roll over in the face of such circumstances.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Hopefully SPs stance is part of the club's progression that we're not prepared to be mugged off on transfer fees. Edited by Teddy Eagle (15 Aug 2024 9.06am)

If that hadn't happened maybe the story would be different. As it is, I think Parish was being completely honest when he said pay what he's worth to us or we're happy to keep him. No brinkmanship, no squeezing, just being candid.

Guehi seems to be an extremely nice guy who is sensible, mature and professional. These were Jude Bellingham's quotes on him during the Euros: "He's the most humble geezer, he thought I'd let him get away with a little handshake but he's just set up the most important goal of my life. I'm really big on giving people their flowers, especially when they've been as good as he has so far in this tournament. He's only a little bit older than me, but when you speak to him or are around him, you get the idea that he's like 40 and played three careers! He's such a nice guy, you forget about his physical presence and playing against him. Whenever I see him going for headers, I think it's nice-guy Marc and then boom, it's not-so-nice Marc! He's a brilliant guy, uncle Marc!” That doesn't strike me as the sort of player who would panic, throw a strop or lower his standards if he doesn't get a move. He'll understand that we have a fee that needs to be met and if it is met then it's up to him to decide, if not I'm sure he'll remain and be just as professional. In terms of his importance to the team, I think ability wise he is our best defender by a while. Yet, funnily enough, I think the specific attributes that Andersen has are actually more fundamental to the way we play. I really hope that Guehi stays but if he does leave it won't change my opinion of him at all, whereas the manner in which Zaha left, for example, did leave a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. The best thing we can do is try to get Lacroix signed so that even if Guehi leaves right at the last minute, we're covered.

Good point, that's my thinking also. Again, realistically we cannot force anyone to stay forever, and that would be a detriment to us in any instance, but equally we're not reliant upon the sale. Therefore our stall is quite easily set and anyone looking to have us over is wasting their time.
