I agree re: dropping Rice. I don't know why few seem to have picked up on this?

I've lost count the amount of times he's played a bad pass or lost the ball. It was his terrible pass to Guehi in the Denmark game that almost cost us. If it weren't for Marc's pace to correct this mistake, we'd have almost certainly conceded!

off the back of that performance, honestly think the best way forward is to play all the bench.

back 4 look ok, and have limited options, squad is so inflexible.
Rice does my head in. goes backward more often than not.
B'ham looks disinterested, but probably just bored of our style of play. Foden been better in last 2, but still wouldn't play both. 1 of the 3 of foden/B'ham or Eze should be in the 10 pos.

walker stones guehi tripp
-- Wharton -- Mainoo
Palmer - Eze/Foden/B'ham - Gordon
----Watkins/Toney

Its inflexible because we are playing the wrong formation for this squad .
A 3-4-2-1 would IMO be better , something like
.............Pickford
.......Walker...Stones,,,,,,Guehi
Trent......Wharton....Rice.........Gordon
.........Bellingham......Foden
................Watkins .......

Every other player in the squad can fit into that like for like ,Mainoo for Wharton ,Saka for Trent (or Gordon), Eze for Foden ,Palmer for Bellingham .ect .Doesn't matter what player you prefer it works .

Rice, saka, bellingham, foden, walker have all had long seasons. they look wrecked out there from the start of the game.

Ive lost count the times kane has come deep to pick the ball up or crosses in from the wing to where he should be to head the ball in.

everything looks disjointed.

disagree, Gordons no LWB. the lack of a leftsided anything is a massive hole in the squad, and restricts what you can do. you've put him there as there are no other options - and thats telling.
TAA has never played WB either(may be wrong) and for that system to work, the 2 wingbacks need to know what their doing.

you may get away with a 433 or 442 with that squad, but GS seems so stuck in his ways, were not going to see anything different.

So after a nights rest, and initial anger has passed...

We're through the group. The Group stage is one that garners some different pressures, where draws 'are good enough', and this can be restrictive.
It's now knockout football. Draws are no good. Penalties are risky.
We should expect Belgium and Netherlands to end up in our half too, So although the easier half, there's still dangerous teams. Add Austria to that list - they've been the surprise package of the tournament. Italy are always dangerous, and the swiss are no pushovers.
I hope now that the group stage mentality is over, we will see more from england.

I also hope we get to play the Dutch in last 16, as that could be a really entertaining game. no idea who will win it.

am I positive? no. I can see us bumbling through to the semis and losing to Austria.

It was less than a decade ago that we would have dreamed of such an outcome and the gallant losers would have been welcomed home by cheering fans.

The Southgate regime is currently hated but boy is it a victim of its own relative success.

The players give no appearance of being remotely happy and Southgate will need to deal with that. My guess is they feel shackled by the team set up and directions and are desperate to let rip. The whole world is seeing them bumble along and they feel the shame and share our frustration.

I think the management (not Southgate, he is just the part of that who takes the blame) had a plan and one thing caused the wheels to come off. The Danish goal was the Mike Tyson punch in the face. No team on earth could have stopped that goal. Without it we would have gone in last night having already won the group and could have done a Spain and field the B-team. Instead, we had to go for a point always keeping a close eye on the other game. It added a tension and meant we had to work harder and the card count accordingly rose. I don't think we had any cards by this stage in the last World Cup.

In response to this, you might say that, after the Danish goal went in, we should have pushed for a winner. Possibly. But that would have been against the plan!

I thought the team would be released last night as we have been in previous third games e.g. Wales. Perhaps the management has learned from that final when it was our turn to run out of gas as an older but canny Italy took control as the game went on. As others have said on this thread, our players tend to have longer seasons than their continental counterparts and we need to spread the energy thinner and longer.

I have never witnessed Alexander-Arnold deployed as a wing-back.In actual fact I have no recollection of Liverpool deploying a back three formation.

Speaking to some gentleman prior to the commencement of the tournament, he stated that TAA spent much of his youth career in M/F, he was never a right-back in his formative years.TAA has of course, on occasions, played in midfield for Liverpool.

I also agree. Mainoo and Wharton would transform this team.

I feel like I'm in the minority who think he is grossly overacted. Not saying his is bad, but he's not particularly confident on the ball, will turn and go back under almost any pressure and doesn't readily make himself available to get the ball off the CBs

Probably explains why Bellingham is sulking. The Scots don't have the players so their fans maybe upset but it's not like they have a few worldies warming the bench. Southgate has no excuses criminal waste of talent.

He wants to have a look in the mirror - he's been the worst player on the pitch in the last 2 games.

Should've been hauled off yesterday - Southgate hasn't got the bottle to drop him in the KOs, so he should have at least sent a message and pulled him out of that s***show yesterday.

Same, Mainoo and Wharton could be the basis of Englands midfield for the next 10 years. But Rice is everyones favourite DM, so I doubt they'll even get a chance together.
I just don't see what he brings (in that position at least).

Wharton hasn't kicked a ball yet and Eze has only had a bit part. If both of them were playing England would shine. The downside is that their excellence would stand out in Southgate's otherwise drab setup and attract global attention and interest.

I'm hoping they will be kept on the sidelines. Keep your heads down lads. Come home soon and play exciting football with Ollie's team.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

They're also incredibly inexperienced to be partnered together - I think it has to be either/or out of those two at this stage.

Rice has had a poor tournament so far, but has been one of the best midfielders in the Prem for a good few years, as well as impressing for England - he needs the right partner, but he's absolutely earnt the right to be a nailed on starter IMO.
