Sunak has finally quantified what the proposed net zero actions planned would actually cost people. Cost of the not fit for purpose heat pumps in older buildings for example , compulsory in new builds fine. The 2035 target is an improvement. Boiler replacement incentive good. Please can we stop pretending that the UK is a leader or influencer in the climate debate. I don't care that we are not, we have plenty of domestic challenges without fretting over what our place in the world on certain issues might be. Energy policies have been consistently rubbish for decades from the lack of gas storage capability to Nick Idiot's 2010 pronouncement on nuclear. We could have had working modular nuclear power plants installed and working by now making the net zero debate a side show. Edited by HKOwen (21 Sep 2023 2.22am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

We need to generate more electricity and better infrastructure from the national grid to charging points for electric cars. People will switch to greener alternatives if they are practical and roughly the same price. So far I am not seeing that with the alternatives to gas boilers so the government should be pushing the industry to find solutions. I remember the switchover to North Sea Gas back in the seventies they had a solution so it wasn't a big deal to the public. Today all you hear are campaigners and NIMBYS complaining about new pylons, wind farms, solar farms, new power stations, new housing etc. etc. Those same campaigners are the first to complain we are not meeting our green targets for nothing against everything. Quite frankly the whole green debate is a mess.

But also a bit of a straw man, no? You see it a lot with people resisting green policies; they quote an extreme position and claim that’s what’s being forced on them, but the reality isn’t that at all. And Sunak with the absolute perfect example of it with his meat tax and 7 bins ramblings.

Solar farms are now hitting the ceiling of output that I calculated for myself. Free energy is being given away for 2 hrs during the day in some areas to encourage higher usage. They are actually switching them off for a few hours in some places!!! There is also the ridiculous situation where an electric car is having its battery power sold BACK to the grid in the evening and charged again at night!!!!!! In the spring/summer/autumn there will be over capacity, in the winter under capacity. Until they get storage facilities where summer power can be stored and used at night all these new solar farms will be wasted. For those that missed my post I have purchased 2x 5KW batteries and only 5x415W solar panels. That gives me enough for the daylight hours in Summer and most of the Spring/Autumn and in the Winter the solar panels are used pretty much all day and the batteries are charged over night at cheap rate for use in the evening. Its an interesting balancing act that the idiots in charge seem to have missed.

Sunak has been politically savvy in as much as these policy changes will be popular and difficult for Labour to say they would reverse the u turn. The public now have a better understanding of the cost of the net zero cult in real terms on real people Edited by HKOwen (21 Sep 2023 11.31am)

And MPs across the board? Think it's hard to describe these changes as popular other than amongst a certain demographic, but I guess that's exactly what it was designed for.

Its an interesting balancing act that the idiots in charge seem to have missed. Battery will form a big component of the energy mix going forward. There have already been recent big investments in Ireland, for example. It's not a case of industry not being aware of the solution, it's the pace and scale of it that is the problem. The sheer scale and complexity of this cannot be magically funded, built and solved overnight. That's without mentioning one of the main holdups in all this, the grid catching up with the need for multiple new types of energy and connection. Those need careful planning, funding and building. You can't just go out and build a battery farm then simply plug it in to the grid like you would a car into a three pin socket. I do think people need to better understand the complexity and scale of what is being done before offering ridiculous comparisons to domestic (and a singular one at that) solutions. BTW decentralisation of energy is not a new thing. More people, if they can afford, should be doing similar things to your example. Takes pressure off the grid, and ultimately, is far cheaper for the individual in the long run.
Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons. |

A tory landlords (currently delaying rent reforms) and fossil fuel CEO's charter. By the end of the decade you certainly will know the price in your energy bill of this. Sunak is not interested in climate, it is a bother and he doesn't even go to meetings. Who does the planet think it is, anyway? Nobody would seriously expect him to keep to any commitments now. Sad to hear of Ken Livingstone being diagnosed with alzheimers. He was very gloomy recently and didn't think the planet would last until 2050. Still, why not do absolutely nothing until 2047, and see what happens?

We had a pretty good run - 160 million years less than the dinosaurs managed but they did less damage.
