I would say lets have a general election- but don"t think its fair to let somebody else try to clear up this mess the CONS have heaped on the country- i"m caught between the rock and the hard place- decisions decisions!

To be fair the Conservatives also inherited Labour mess to clean up, it goes with the territory
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

No it hasn't. Over the past 20 years or so all our politicians have become increasingly aware that the threat from man made climate change is real and represents the most serious threat we have ever faced. They have access to the science in ways which we don't. If there was ever an issue that demanded a global response it's this one. Unless we tackle it together the future for those that follow looks so bleak that there may not even be one. You posted yesterday that "'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in". Unusually for you it's completely true and is entirely apposite when considering how we must respond to climate change. No politician, of whatever party, can claim to be truly serving their people if they put short term interests above the need to deal with climate change. Which is why the trend to populism and the dumbing down of politics which follows, is so dangerously inappropriate at this time more than any. Your constant attacks on the WEF and globalism are not just malicious misrepresentations, they are part of a larger effort by the right to sow doubts and a lack of trust in governments, NGOs and other concerned stakeholders, when we need them to succeed more than ever. Have you ever stopped to consider who is growing the seed that you sow? You often ask people to "follow the money". Do so yourself. Supporting other countries to deal with climate change is not an alternative to us providing support to our own sick, needy and vulnerable. We must do both and the rest of us must shoulder the costs. Us old men need to plant some trees! This recession will be painful. Those selfishly going on, or threatening, strikes at this time disgust me. As do those making stupid protests which disrupt the lives of others. We need to face this together, work hard and accept less. Playing blame games produces nothing but anger and hot air and we already have more than enough of both. Maybe some of those countries screaming for 'compensation' for climate change should have planted a few tree of their own from all the billions that we have consistently poured into their countries since the 1960's. Maybe, their Presidents' should have made do with one less private jet, their wives with 25 less pairs of shoes......

Having lived in the Philippines for a while you won't find a bigger critic of their political system than me. Not that I could say so whilst there. Foreign nationals are banned from any involvement in politics and can easily end up in jail for just expressing an overheard opinion, or dead if they make a lot of noise. Corruption is endemic and violence frequent. There are good people who are trying to make things better but it is a hugely complicated situation. Some of it is the legacy of colonialism and exploitation. Some greed. Some simply the fact they are still developing. Whether the same issues affect other countries I don't have the same experience to be sure, but it does seem likely. The bottom line must be that whether they deserve help, or not, ultimately it's in our own interests to ensure they get it. What they do, or don't do, to reduce emissions impacts us as much as our own efforts do. Maybes don't help anyone. It's a global problem for which only a global solution can work.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Glad to see it's still somehow our fault, even though you're not allowed to say anything to them for fear of imprisonment or death. Entirely reasonable.

Current immigration has no direct bearing on this, but if we don't succeed in conquering global warming we are going to see a lot more as a consequence. I am not as au fait with the term as Stirling, but the word "globalism" has a very different meaning in right wing circles to the sort of international co-operation you are referring to.
