What surprises me is that those responsible for a four year enquiry which apparently unearthed evidence of serious crimes didn't think to inform the police of their findings. Quite. Brand slept with thousands of women, and I think aspects of his behaviour are valid to criticise. However, If Brand had been a rapist then the Police would have been involved decades ago. What's more likely is that he was an arse with some women and some others are opportunists now the culture is different. Like you imply, If Brand is a rapist then spending 4 years on an investigation and not going to the Police looks incredibly irresponsible. I think the media know it doesn't stand up in court and so are willing to blacken his name in public instead.

Do we know they didn’t inform the police? It is down to individuals to make complaints and perhaps those complaining were/are reluctant to do so, either because of mistrust, embarrassment or fear. This may give them the confidence to do so. I heard the primary journalists involved, from Horizon and the Times, interviewed on the very detailed process that was undertaken to assess how this would be handled. It wasn’t a simple or quick decision. They were well aware of the need to respect a presumption of innocence whilst ensuring that what was fact was presented but also that which was just allegation was stated as such. So mistrust, embarrassment or fear stopped them going to the police with their allegations, but it was ok airing everything with a bunch of journalists? OK

OK On the basis of anonymity, yes, especially when they weren’t aware of one another at the time. I would hope, and expect, the journalists to have encouraged them to also go to the police and that they would support them with the evidence they had. The suggestion, made recently by another poster, that any allegation of rape would necessarily be reported to the police is nonsense. It just doesn’t happen like that. There are many stories of embarrassment, shame or distrust restraining what ought to happen in every case.

They would have had anonymity if they went to the police... and whilst women do generally go to the Ladies in pairs, with rape complaints, perhaps not so much. I love the mansplaining though....

What like disregarding gas appliance regulations? Of course not. What is this obsession with gas appliances? I have already patiently explained that I don’t have gas connected to any of my rental properties so these constant references can only be because you think you are being witty in some obscure way. Whatever floats you boat. I think it sunk before it left the mooring.

They might not have trust though. They almost certainly did not approach the journalists. Much more likely the journalists found them, via probing rumours. Yes I am a man, but I have a wife, two daughters, 3 granddaughters and 2 great granddaughters. They keep on my toes and well informed.

Politically Matov we are poles apart, but on this we have complete agreement. Back on topic, I listened to a woman who was invited on to the Today Program to discuss her "experience". She explained that she was "only" 16 and Brand was 30. She claimed not have had the life experience to inform her ability to make a choice as to the giving of consent in a heart-tugging, bleating voice. There was no suggestion that he had invited her to his house to e.g. give her a leg up (so to speak) on her proposed media career. Indeed, there was no coercion alleged at all. Even my feminist wife was shouting at the radio on that interview. She willingly got in a car in order to go to a well known lothario's house of her own free will with the inevitable consequences. 30 year old men have been happily having it away with even happier 16 year old girls since time immemorial, so why was this case singled out? Also, Parliament argued to the death the age of consent and arrived at the conclusion that changes in mental development meant that by that age girls had shifted from fancying their teachers and friends' dads. It was a "safe" age and remains so. Questions not asked of the interviewee but ones directly relevant to issues of proper and valid consent. 1. Were you a virgin? None asked. This was legal consensual intercourse. So why was the BBC steaming in suggesting some impropriety? Why had they given this revisionist, opportunist young woman the time of day? Now I am a fierce defender of the BBC, as you know, but not in this case. The car and driver sent to pick this 16 year old girl up and take her to a house to have it off with a celeb was paid for by the license payer? Now, that is a story! I hate the fact that if a guy rapes me, legally it counts as 'consenting sex' because I'm not a virgin. The fact that anyone would think that questions 1-4 could be a deciding factor in whether it could be a rape or not absolutely horrifying and a truly perfect illustration of why so many rapes happen, hell of a lot of people are probably doing it and in their heads aren't doing anything wrong
