I have the Times and Mail. Both reports of our game were disappointing in that they each focused on Spurs shortcomings rather than the Palace. However, Tony Cascarino writing in The Times, and who is not usually very supportive of Palace was positively glowing in his praise, particularly for Zaha. And he had 3 of our players in his TOTW - Mitchell, Gallagher and Zaha. You need to come over to the left for the best Palace reviews [Link]

Agreed Oxford. If Zaha could have controlled himself and stayed down rather than attempting a retaliation, then (1) he would have avoided his yellow card, and (2) referee Moss would have had little option but to have given a red card on the spot. I have always thought this is the type of behaviour that can only be punished by scoring goals against...Spurs were already clearly rattled, and 5 minutes later justice was done when Tanganga fouled JA and got the red. Wilfs weakness is his temper; he should try some meditation practice. That said, a most satisfying performance. This team is better than I have seen for some while, but we have to accept we will not win every game; we bought well in the closed season, but we don't have the money of Mank City. Cant wait for Eze to return! Bring on the Bin Dippers next Saturday!
The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist. |

What WAS his rationale then NEILLO? He said that as the game had been reported on in the Sunday Times, and the match had taken place 2 days ago, they now write ' themed ' reports on the Monday. My response was ; * Then don't headline it as a match report if it isn't To be fair, he conceded those points although came out with the excuse that due to Covid restrictions, he had no access to the likes of Gallagher or Edouard and so was unable to write about them - which I don't accept...he didn't speak with Winks either !

He also said we wouldn't have won without the red card, which again sounded like sour grapes. As to the game as a whole, the first half an hour Wilf looked like his recent self but then it all seemed to change the moment he realised he had the beating of the new lad for Spurs. His head seemed to lift and as a confidence player he grew into the game. First half we controlled the game without really threatening, but like at West Ham we came out much stronger in the second half and seemed like the only team looking for a win. Edouard made a difference when he came on as he seemed to instinctively know where to run to when attacking and we have missed a striker like that since I can't remember when. For the second goal Bentenke would probably have been on the edge of the box looking to act as the wall for a one-two with Wilf, whereas Edouard just legged it to the penalty spot trusting Wilf to find him. What I love about Andersen and Guehi is the way if they see space ahead of them they will run into it with the ball, often continuing to stride forward even after passing the ball. Unlike in previous seasons we actually have centre-backs who you don't cringe whenever they're in possession. Gallagher and Kouyate were both guilty of losing possession in front of the back four due to poor touch, but thankfully Spurs were applying little pressure. Against Liverpool we will need to be more careful of that as their front three will punish us for careless errors. Spurs can cry all they like about the referee but whatever his decisions correct or not they were terrible. I questioned them getting Nuno given he is so similar in style to Mourinho and yesterday confirmed what I thought. It was like the 1-1 draw last season when Spurs were incredibly passive, but unlike Saturday we didn't take full advantage. I had wanted Nuno, but it may be we lucked out on not getting Nuno after all. Time will tell. There was a really good example of this in the first half when Andersen mugged Kane, made a long diagonal forward run and passed to Wilf. Not content with that he then continued his run to create an overlap and ended up on the left wing ahead of Wilf. This fluidity reminded me on when Wenger first arrived at Arsenal and encouraged players like Adams and Dixon to venture into parts of the pitch they had probably never been to before.

Thought Eduoard showed he’s a poacher. However he’s a different player to Benteke and Benteke deserves some of the credit. 80 minutes physical battles with Benteke being a hold up man for the Spurs players to suddenly have to deal with a different player with 10 men. Bats tried leading our line and couldn’t with any real effect. CB is a focal point. Eduoard did the clever poacher role which we have been crying out for, but CB certainly didn’t have a bad game. I agree. Vieira gave Benteke a lot of credit in his after match comments, which I thought was not only justified but also good management. It cannot be easy battling away only to see your replacement score after 28 seconds and then get another when totally unmarked. I think both players will play important, but very different, roles this year and will sometimes start together. Having the options means opposing teams don't know what they will be facing, which is a new problem when playing us. Both Mitchell and Ward have come in for a lot of criticism in these threads, but Mitchell had an excellent game on Saturday and Ward has been our saviour a few time already. Both are doing a good job for the team, and we could easily do much worse. Ward didn't complain when AWB took his place, and stepped back in when he was sold. He might have to do the same, if and when Ferguson gets himself fit. Some appreciation is well overdue.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Thanks for the explanation NEILLO. I see what you mean by 'flimsy'. In fairness, the ST report was a good one, but I like to see as many reports as I can. Only when we win mind!

I also noticed that when Wilf was trying his best to gob off till he got a red card, it was the England captain, rather than our own, who was there to calm him down. It's not the first time I've noticed that our own players seem to let him go off like a loose cannon. I might be getting my memories confused, but I recall that when he got the red vs Southampton, only Ayew was on hand to pacify. Everyone else just let him explode, with that knowing look to one another that he was 'going off again.'
But I do agree that generally Nobody seems to be taking the responsibility and that Luka was conspicuously absent in that Southampton incident. Somebody was saying that with Guehi as U21 captain and Andersen as captain when on loan at Fulham, plus Hughes, we are getting in some leaders and it is leaders on the pitch that has been one of the things we have been lacking.
I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals. |
