Watch the Southampton game again and tell me that his passing was up to scratch. Attempting a pass but not actually pulling it off is absolutely pointless. “Nearly never won the race.” And I am not just singling him out for that, Our passing as a whole is absolutely dreadful. We seem to have a team of players who struggle with the very simple stuff. I wonder is that because Roy focuses so much on tactics and positioning that he leaves the ball work behind. I watched an interview after the Saints away game and he said that they do not practice free kicks or corners and that it is all done with Dean Kiely on video. Also I am not PVA biggest fan in the slightest we need a big upgrade on him moving forward but he does a job and will do for the time being. Edited by EddieMac (04 Feb 2020 8.03am) Let's face it, the Soton game was the season's nadir (so far!) and an abject team performance and on the individual level Jairo was by no means the worst performer. I take your point about passing in that particular game but I suggest it's unfair to judge a player's passing ability on one game especially a game like that when everyone was off the pace.

Fair point. That game was the lowest of the low.

Indeed, but Southampton were very good, and proved this by taking the game to Liverpool at Anfield first half on Saturday. I also would like to see Jairo given more opportunities in Midfield, even if its off the bench.

One of the best passers of a ball at the club. For one 90 minutes in 2020 please. Was it against Man City he played in midfield.. and looked damn alright..?

As long as Roy H puts out the "trusted" midfield of 2 x James Mac and Luka, I can not see us winning any game. Add Benteke on top and, sorry to say because Joel Ward is a model professional and a very decent human being, we probably have the weakest right back in PL.

Riedewald arrived at the club as a ball playing centre-back, but with FdB gone he has not been deemed suitable in that role. He filled in excellently at left-back but lacks PvA's pace and attacking threat. He is a good passer of the ball, but he does lose the ball more than people seem to be making out here and does not seem as mobile as some of the other central midfielders who are very box-to-box. He strikes me as one of those players that needs to be playing every week to get the best out of him and to keep him in shape. To be fair he looked very composed playing at centre-back in pre-season, so long-term I can see him playing there, whether it's for Palace or not. Under Roy I can't see him staking a role back in the first XI barring injuries, but if we can hold onto him then I think he has a bright future under whoever succeeds Hodgson, with the same probably being true for Meyer.

Did he? I thought he arrived as a defensive midfielder but my memory isn't what it used to be. Other than that I agree with what you say and he is getting better and better the more he plays. If we ever revert to 4-4-2 I can see him playing left midfield. As we play 4-3-3 it is difficult to break into the team as he is not a wide player and would as you say have to knock one of the box to box types out of the midfield. He could of course take Luka's place but for every good thing he might bring to that role, he probably doesn't have the tenacity of Luka.

He was certainly presented primarily as a defender when he signed [Link] but one who could also operate in midfield. Interesting to note that he had the highest pass success rate that year not just for Ajax but for the league!

Playing Luka, McArthur, McCarthy, and Benteke at the same time, we have no chance to score 1 goal. It's honestly a ridiculous level of offensive futility.

Riedewald once more not used. What about placing him on the right back slot and get someone who usually pass the ball to a teammate?

Oddly, because I agree he looks a good passer, but JRs stats are worse than pvas. PVA passes more often and with more success.
