Don't think it's media nonsense. Far from it. But any medical would be very, very extensive. Think there are a few irons in the fire.

Perhaps we should have a look at the Russian guy West Ham are trying to buy with the money they are hoping to raise in selling Sakho

Centre forward call Fyodor Smolov, plays for Krasnodar in Russia. 48 goals in 68 games for club, 11 in 28 for his country, speaks good English, 27 years of age. Krasnodar want £15m. I know the games isn't just about goals, there's other things to take into consideration, but that goal scoring records pretty good!

With most regular footballing injuries they're a known quantity, that's why you get very specific return dates. Even with a longer term injury you can assess the healing and see if it is progressing as it should, so although there will be a risk it can be within acceptable limits.
It maybe that the underlying problem with his back is harder to assess and makes it a much greater risk. It may not be that he 'failed', given that he has played following the injury, but that the risk of it returning is too great at this time.
