Does anyone actually remember how unpopular Thatcher was before the Argentinian move on the Falklands/Malvinas? At that time she was the least popular PM since 1945. She had tried to front up against the steel workers but been forced to back down. The one name that hasn't figured in these posts is perhaps the most significant of all -Nicholas Ridley. He drafted the Ridley Plan which set out the methodology of taking on the unions. During the 1970's he was linked to a group of ex-army officers, large land owners and right-wing MPs centred in Wiltshire who made contingency plans for civil war. With Thatcher's election it was thought that the civil war could be waged through parliamentary means -instead of creating the excuse for a coup d'etat - backed up by forces of law. Initially this group felt extremely disappointed in the Tory leader.
Ridley expected it to be a physical affair and planned the policing accordingly. It was his aim to have the miners crushed. They heroically stood out for a year but the other trade union leaders, though providing funds for the strikers' families refused to give them what they needed - support through joint strike action. And the Kent miners Kerms were heroic in their stance -isolated geographically from the other minefields but remaining solid.
Of course road blocks were put on all roads to Deal and checks to see if any miners were coming to Kent in solidarity were forcibly turned back, if that was too much hassle, windscreens or tyres were dealt with.

When the Falklands/Malvinas war had ended and the troops returned to Portsmouth there was a rail strike taking place. The troops placed a banner over the side of their aircraft carrier, it read. "You say rail strike -we say air strike", indicating where their loyalties lay.

I remember this , although I thought initial plans were to start this during Wilsons reign

It is a left-wing myth that Britain pre-1979 was a socially cohesive land of solid working communities. It wasn't.

It was a divided country before Thatcher. She didn't create the beef with the unions. Nor did she cause the long-term economic decline. Left-wing propaganda to pretend she did.

Thatcher is certainly divisive and from the 'humanist' political decisions she made I would say she has a legacy that can only be described as truly appalling. From her stance on South African apartheid, sectarian discrimination in Northern Ireland, section 28 (i.e. discrimination against gay people), support of Pinochet and the Khmer Rouge and the sinking of the Belgrano (I still blush at THAT interview) there can be few who like her...except of course those small band of right wingers on here who supported Sunderlands decision to appoint the fascist Di Canio. I would term those views as those of apologists, collaborators or just plain cowards.
But some of Thatcher's 'economic' political decisions should be seen as just that. Some may agree with her stance of the unions, privatisations, selling council houses and a free market economy rather than a total reliance on the state (nb. I agreed with these)or disagree with her for milk snatching, care in the community or not re-investing the council house revenue into new social housing (nb I disagreed with these) and I was neutral on health and education policy.
For the economic decisions we should say that we all had a vote but for her humanist decisions I think we have to acknowledge that there is a lot of lingering pain.
But with here death let us all agree that she was just a woman, someone's mother and someone's friend and we should ourselves be more human and just let her rest in peace.

In my own humble opinion she was just another parasitic politician.I took my political coloured glasses off many years ago and saw the lot of em for what they really were.Mainly a lot of ordinary people who were just greedy, and out to look after number one.But their gravy train is much, much bigger than ours, and don`t they just exploit that.I dare say most of us would get some of the action if we were in a position to do so.Thing is,most of us just aint in on their circle to get the action. So,all in all she was just a run of the mill very greedy politician,of which there are many.

Thatcher created a Tory mentality that has grown out of hand.
Now anyone earning more than £150k a year has had their tax cut making them richer. Whereas yesterday, disabled and those with one bedroom too many saw their benefits cut. The people wont put up with it for long.

Good move. Reward the hard working and make the lazy get a job. I know someone one on disability allowance top up who is taking the piss. Eating out at restaurants every day (cause he can't cook...ah bless!) and wasting money on women cause he can't hold down a girlfriend .

"Reward the hardworking"? Plenty of hardcore grafters dont earn a fraction of £150k yet are being shafted by the Tories.
Disabled people want to work like everyone else yet are unable. Yes it's different if they are dishonestly claiming but thats a completely separate argument.

Definately true, what people tend to leave out is the zietgiest principle. In 1980 the UK was at a point of historical importance, industralist society was dying in the UK, and whoever came to power would need to choose which route forwards to take, essentially a left wing or right wing approch that would set the tone for post-industrial UK.

The 'Majesty of Thatcher' is probably something of a misnomer, as for the most part politicians can only react to tides in society, and events that occur, they more point the ship in a direction, and then take the credits, and delinate the blame.

Had Labour won the 1980 election, they would likely have gone in a different route, which is just as likey to have produced an equally diversive PM (albiet one venerated by the Left and grave danced by the Right). Societ would have been very differet, and likely people would still be arguing over whether they were right or wrong.

The illusion is really I suspect, that either decision was actually the right one (as the alternative can never been known, and the chosen path had both success and failures in fairly dramatic proportions).

Lets face facts, were it not for the Falklands, it seems likely that the conservatives might very well have lost the subsiquent election (or if the Falklands conflict had dragged on another month prob less, it could have even resulted in a humilating defeat - as the task force would have had been unable to achieve re-supply, and losses would have ground out a retreat and potential surrender).

Exactly, the idea that 'high earners' equates to hard workers is a massive mysnomer. The likelyhood is that their 'hard work' is actually fairly light, compared to everyone working minimum wage jobs. I've found, in my experience, that high earners rarely actually work hard. Some definately put in long hours, largely sat in comfortable chairs in meeting rooms.

Anyone whos worked a physical labour based job knows that a putting in a sixty or seventy hour week is shattering work, that can leave you with physical injuries - and won't pay anywhere near a reasonable fraction of that 150k salaried job.
