i've never claimed that. yes every home game for the past 6 seasons (I was only 11 then so don't blame me for before that!). But very few away as it happens. I happen to put my 5 days of school/college plus 1 day of my weekend working ahead of going to every away game. i don't turn up only when bothered, i turn up when i can, and with home games i go out of my way to get there. and personally i don't know any millwall fans, i have a much more intense rivalry with nottingham forest on that basis. and going on club rivalry, I'd say Brighton is a team we hate more. Going on locality, yes Millwall is the closest besides our tenants. But I happen to live near Wimbledon, and they would be MY local rivals. My resentment towards Millwall begins and ends with them being animals, local, but then so is Chessington Zoo.

shame on you people. Gordon Law's article hit the nail on the head, if you cant be arsed to go to a ground 6 miles away, and you dont 'have better things to do', then you should not call yourself a palace fan. our forefathers would be disgusted if they knew we were struggling to take 1000 to the den - safety isnt a problem either if you have a bit of sense. If you dont wear colours and make a swift entrance upon arrival, then its all good. Fans from previous generations would also cringe at us saying "i might go if we beat rotherham" - something i saw on the bbs. i have seen one fan that couldnt go because arrangements couldnt be made to aid her disability, not an excuse but a fact. A bloke missed the birth of his fkin kid to go to the 5-0 brighton match - that kind of sentiment and devotion to seeing your team against their arch rivals (the New den is 6 miles from selhurst) is what a football club like ours should pride itself on. Millwall brought 4000 this year, 5000 last - why? Because they care for their team and are willing to sing their hearts out for the team they love, even if it means running the risk of losing. Their average attendance this year has been about 9000, so half of their season ticket holders/members turned up earlier this season - we have 11000 (or is it 8000 simon?!) season ticket holders, and we cant take 10% of that to the millwall match - thats p1ss poor. My last point about this shameful subject is that looking back over the season, our away support has always been good - better than last year at least. At Ipswich, on a sunday, albeit after a couple of good wins, we took what i estimate to be about 2800/3000, and made them look silly. Despite losing the lead, our players fought back, showing the resilience we so often crave at palace. Then Butterfield pops up and nicks it with 10 minutes to go - the 3000 that travelled what is a lot further than 6 miles got a good win against a quality side. the satisfaction of an away win is hard to match - but just imagine it against Millwall. Course, most of you will, and will then think 'Oh well, i will next year'. I can bet loads of you were there when we beat em 4-1 on boxing day - what an event eh?i can also bet that most of the people going were there that day. I know the kicking recieved outside wasnt too pleasent but the dens a different place now. Can i go to millwall? nah, im cutting the grass but i will next year.
No, my mate's not going this time! He's the tightwad, not me. I'd be happy to go, but I don't think I can get a ticket without £££!

I don't usually disagree with Gordon Law but I certainly can't be arsed to go to Millwall. I have been making the pilgrimage to the Old and New Dens for many decades and am afraid that the statement that you are perfectly safe as long as you don't wear colours and slink along the street like a frighened rat doesn't appeal to me either. You will, of course, be even safer if you wear a blue shirt and put a lion mask ovr your head! Millwall may have improved over the years but I don't feel safe there and I have got better things to do on an Easter Monday. And public transport will be crap too, bank holday style.

Millwall are one of my pet hates
Wouldn't less use of the word 'hate' benefit everyone when it came to football hooliganism and community spirit?

Andy_Eagle Poole, Dorset 15 Apr 2003 8:44pm It's those who say such things who need to get a life!! I have a season ticket, I paid £200 odd for and I've been to 2 games this season.... That mean I'm not a real supporter?? Or does it mean that real life means, due to work and finances that I can't get from Dorset to London for every home game?? Behave and grow up.... I love Palace as much as anyone, I feel bad when we lose, feel high when we win... I tattooed myself with the club badge... So don't tell me I'm not a true supporter... Kiss my arse!! Andy
'We're flying high and promotion is our aim (again!), we won't give in, we are the Eagles and you'll never shoot us down'........OK it's a very old record! |

It amazes me that we sell out 900 tickets for the Gillingham game and cant raise 1000 for the Millwall game. What's the difference ? Both games have little significance due to our league position but I know who I would rather beat and that's why I'm going to the New Den ? It's got nothing to do with bravado - it's just that getting one over on Millwall means a lot more to me than beating the pikies in a farmer's field. And I also want to see which of our players has the bottle and wont be intimidated - that will be a true indication of who are the real "Big time Charlies." If only everyone felt like that. Like i said somewhere else "Hate" is a very strong word to use for football rivalry, especially at a time when British troops are coming home in body bags because of "real" fighting in Iraq. If there are Palace and Wall organisjng a knuckle on the net then maybe they should all be rounded up and forced to join the forces and go and have a real fight. Then again that might be too scarey for them!!!!!

I'll be there, let's just hope the 700 odd of us make a fair bit of noise. If you don't want to go, don't go. Simple.
I think Keith Murray said it best when he rapped I'm sure you'll agree. |
