Re the Mirror, I totally agree MrF, that they change opinions whichever way the wind blows -- much like New Labour, in fact. But that's only to be expected. If you want a clear unbiased view of the news, you need to (at the very least) read two newspapers, watch BBC and Channel 4 news (and possibly others like Al Jazeera), and read the web reports (indymedia is excellent). Maybe then you can filter the facts from the flannel. As for the BNP taking seats, this is not because of the likes of me welcoming people into the UK, don't be ridiculous. It's because certain sectors of the media are whipping up the hysteria about it. Just like the NotW's Name&Shame thing on paedos a while back -- they're still out there, but the mobs have died down a bit now because it's not on the front pages any more. Just you wait, as soon as the meeja move on to their next pet subject, this conversation will end.

I suppose you're on the right lines but are you now telling me that BBC/ITV/Channel 87/Sky/Whatever aren't politically swayed either? We all know the shortcomings of left wing Sky guru Murdoch (who changes sides more often than he changes his under-garments depending on what government he is trying to make part with their cash) but equally, our network TV channels report vastly differing stories. Try watching a news bulletin on ITV then one on BBC... its shocking how the same story can be so different. Unfortunately, the only way of getting the truth is seeing the news happen, and i for one don't want to be murdered/stabbed/sent to Iraq/sign for a chinese second division team/etc just so i can find out the truth. I'd rather be naive and live in my own pleasant little world with my large quantities of booze and drugs

Lets be honest, every newspaper, tabloid or broadsheet, has an underlying issue that its trying to *appear* on the side of but the fact is, its all propaganda. No newspaper is right, but most of them are wrong, bending the facts to make their case....

This is about to be challenged as Sky News and others want to become more opinionated like they have in USA because it boosts TV ratings such as the pro-USA/war news channels out there. It will be a bad thing if it happens over here. Regarding asylum seekers and crime - the facts and figures in the Kent towns speak for themselves. To anyone who thinks that the asylum seekers have unfairly been given a hard time, ask people you may know who live in those areas of Kent and they will all give you the same response. I believe some of the Kent mob on here will also say the same.

Slugs, are you saying the people of Britain are only concerned about Asylum Seekers because the media has told them to be? Christ that's a condescending statement! Do you really think the British public are unthinking automatons? People are worried because it's on their doorstep! It's all around them! And that really is my last word! ...maybe!

I know its regulated but it still does have a political bias due to the fact that the person writing it has a view and the person reviewing it has an opinion... thats life and there will never be a truly unbiased news article. At least with newspapers, you know where you stand. Best to buy the Mail and Guardian each day, read both sides of the stories and make your own mind up! and you've managed to pick the worst 2 newspapers produced in this country too

the mirror is poo, but at least it has been anti war since the issue first ever arose (never changed its opinion there) and has the quote i put in earlier as its comment of the day - hardly the mass opinion is it? not judging from this thread anyhow! great footie section too....

Newspapers have a particular political spin, but TV news aren't allowed. What news channel has a particular political agenda? Also there are many totally unbiased news articles published every day of the week. Your point about the person reviewing having an opinion is totally irrelevant!!

The Mirror claims to be a serious newspaper but still has a large proportion of showbiz and tacky stories! But their hacks scooped a few journalism awards recently is good for them.

Your point about the person reviewing having an opinion is totally irrelevant!! For example, you are a gay, black/asian, female journalist and a gay, black/asian, female gets attacked by a straight, white, male and you write what, in your opinion, is an unbiased report for a TV news article. Before this goes on air it is reviewed by another person who deems the first report to slant towards the left/right/whatever. The fact is that the report WILL be biased because everyone has an opinion, whether its biased towards the original journalist or the person at the ITC who is getting ready for the endless complaints...... Any person who has an input into what we are told is hardly irrelevant.

You don't get basic facts from newspapers, you do from TV news headlines. I couldn't disagree more Pete. All you get from the headlines is a brief precis of what someone deems to be the important stories of the day. Quote Petealiator

Do you really think the British public are unthinking automatons? People are worried because it's on their doorstep! It's all around them! I am saying exactly that. How else do you explain the sudden surge of activity against suspected paedophiles, which just as suddenly died off? What about the outpouring of sympathy when the Ethiopian famine was on TV, yet now there is nothing? It's only natural that people are going to discuss and feel passionate about what's on their mind at the moment... and the reason a lot of these issues are on people's minds is because they read about them so often. The immigration issue, for example, is not on most people's doorsteps at all. Yet everyone seems to have an opinion, educated or otherwise.

Tell you what else annoys me is irresponsible tw@ts like Ian Duncan Nobody making it worse by insinuating that all asylum seekers are terrorists. I mean, let's give this a moment's thought. If YOU were a terrorist, would you come into the UK using the most security-obsessed system involving compulsory internment for months, or would you get a tourist or student visa and stroll in without any difficulties. I'll leave you to figure it out.
