I am so completely confused by the entire thread. Pikies are chavs and neds in my book... and "travellers" are gypsies.

I agree that used in certain contexts it could be offensive but most of the time it's just mindless banter. Anyway, pikies are complete t***s.

And, while I realise you guys don't think I've been here very long and saying this is going to make me out to be a f*cking c*** but "Palace Tart" - you've just made a total tit of yourself.

I also live in Brighton and quite like it.

having read this thread i have to say that both sides have a point in my opinion, but that palace tart loses all credibility for the way she goes about her argument.

never have a read such garbage on this site before. why attack someone personally simply for the fact they have a different opinion to you - the fact you stoop to childish name calling and questioning gary's sexual adaquacy only serves to undermine you even more and make you out to be a fool.

Fair call. However my argument is (as someone who works in politics) that people jump on certain bandwagons who do not and will never be submitted to certain environments.

Not only that, 'Gary O' took a traditional and cultural posturing nd accused it of being "NF".

Historically and factually it was not only incorrect, but also offensive and the accusation derives from teenage wannabe politics.

I could argue with him on any level, but to equate my culture/politics so readily based on his youth and inexperience deserves an equal reponse.

The very core of his argument and then defence, was not only incorrect but charged with baseless and well-worn (and discredited) views. So, in my opinion politically and sexually, I responded like wise.

There is no doubt in my opinion, that to attack (and wrongly so if you check his accusation against me) "No Surrender" by equating it to a long vanquished and insignificant ideology shows he (by the very fact he has signed up to have this very argument only)only came on here for two reasons:

1) He has no girlfriend
2) he has joined a political party that has filled his head with useless and incoherent nonsense.

On the subject of "travellers" or in common venacular "Pikies", he takes a charge levelled by Fleet Street mongers at a sect of working class youth as an indictment on the "Gypsy" community. Rising (as I did) to that charge I gambled (correctly) that other than seeing Brad Pitt act in a s***-pop movie, he took it upon himself to now come on here and defend them (even though they were not actually under attack on the original forum postings.)

Further than that, having seen "travellers" or "Pikies" up close, I do not feel there is any reason for anyone who has to live under their criminal gaze to accept a "moral" bollocking from someone who is so misinformed or so clueless of the realities of this subject.

So, I relegated it to the gutter from where it came.

I can only await the "some of my best friends are Gypsies" from his ilk.

As for the Chavs, of whom he was so mixed up in the first place, the working classes hate them.

Middle class dicks like him believe it's a "cultural phenomenon", those of us closer to the ground think: "Chavs are scum".

That includes Pikies/Gippos etc,etc

(Excuse the spelling, my kid woke up half way through)

Palace Tart, you're somebody who works in Politics right? And judging by the flag, and some earlier references it seems that you live in Northern Ireland. Did it ever occur to you that if everybody in your country thought the way Gary O, and Seth did it might not be the bloody mess that it is now?

To be honest I think Gary O's original post was completely over the top. Racism? Since when does opting out of normal society change your race? The word Pikey (as many have pointed out) doesn't just mean traveller, it means scum. In my experience, a lot of travellers deserve to have this label and the abuse that goes with it, but that's beside the point.

Its only a joke. It's funny to call them Pikeys, The same way it's funny to say that all Norwich fans are farmers, all Liverpool fans are theifs, and all Brighton fans are gay. I also think our stripey Nigel label is quite funny.

But back to Palace Tart. Northern Ireland is full of people like you, and thats why there's been a civil war there for god knows how long. I don't care if the slogan "No surrender" is an ancient, cultural and historic protestant slogan. The fact is that nowadays it's been hi-jacked by nazi-groups and you know it. Whatever it means to you, when Londoners hear it we think of the NF, and as you may have noticed the SE in SE25 stands for South East London. So don't try and justify it sensibly like an adult (after you got told off for being childish). Then what? Oh yes, the middle class jibe. Real smooth. If middle class youngsters can't be idealistic then who can?

Your whole post sounds like quotes from the ladybird first book of politics. Full of impressive words, but totally lacking in content. With one exception, when you made the classic politician's mistake of allowing your real personality so penetrate the propaganda:

"He hasn't got a girlfriend, nah nah na nah nah"

I certainly don't want to be accused of avoiding the main issue, so here's my opinion: Racism is totally unnaceptable in football (or anywhere), however, broad (and usually incorrect) generalisations about regional differences are funny, and are essential in our football culture. If every town was the same then how could we ever have any pride in our own?

Unfortunately racial prejudice is alive and well in all corners of the Globe. The root of much of this is however due to personal experience. So the fact that people are prejudice against certain races due to their own personal experience is understandable in some cases... and also historical/Political/geographical prejudice cannot be discounted.. (Arabs/Jews) (Protestant/Catholic), ("country A" / whatever country is next-door to "country A")..... even ("Football team A" / "next nearest football team".....and Brighton) . It's always been that way. Human nature I guess.

Now, back to the point I was originally trying to make.. I have had a number of incidents where 'travellers/gypsies/Pikies' have moved into neighbourhoods nearby my house (near Lansdowne Road) and also my old school (Ashburton). And yes, break-ins and car-thefts did rise during this period EVERY time AND again EVERY TIME stripped stolen cars (and in one case the Schools' video recorder complete with Croydon Education Council sticker) were recovered from the site (including my own car... what was left of it).
Now... I'd like to be open minded an PC about this but due to personal experience..(5 separate incidents where travellers have moved in nearby, 4 break-ins during these times and 1 car theft) and if I'm 100% honest with myself... If travellers moved into my neighbourhood my first thought would be to think "oh no... I'd better secure the home and car". As I said, it's a terrible thing to say.. but that would honestly be my first thought based on past experience. I wish I could say it wouldn't be my first thought.. but unfortunately it is.
Now I know I'm going to get a lot of "travellers/gypsies/pikies are different types of people...you don't know who you were dealing with back then.. and you're 100% right.. I don't!.. however, when they move into your neighbourhood, it is difficult to distinguish the differences between travelling communities by sight alone and as such, they unfortunately get "tarred with the same brush". Again, a terrible thing to say.. but in my view understandable from a victims' perspective. I believe that many victims' first (and probably the most honest) reaction would be the same as mine. However, I do realise that a more PC reaction would be more acceptable in today's society. But that would mean me not being honest with my thoughts.

All peoples opinions on this subject are valid from either side of the fence. Opinions can be based on personal experience, the media, word of mouth.. etc... and as there are many different sources/reasons for prejudice it will never be resolved. Prejudice started with the dawn of man and it hasn't been solved so far...
