Ugly things - better out at sea than on land for me. Not to forget the annual maintenance, which requires ships and/or helicopters to transport personnel and spare parts. I haven't looked into the overall 'green credentials of these turbines but it seems a lot of people do conveniently forget the full environmental cost of them and think it is 100% environmentally friendly. Personally I am not adverse to them but cannot see any time when we can be fully reliant on such farms for producing enough energy.

That's great, but it does nothing to change the reality than we can and have reversed some human impact on the environment, and should continue to do so. I'm not saying that we don't. I just don't think we should beat ourselves up in doing so. If the UK went totally carbon neutral tomorrow it would make no difference to the global climate change. Yet it would cost us billions/trillions in doing so. The climate agenda has replaced religion as a form of control of the population which is why it is being pushed so heavily. Setting unrealistic carbon neutral targets just causes pain for the population who pay for it.

a bit of a childish response, especially as you appear to live in HK. I live in quite a rural area on the edge of the peak district with view from my house of kinder scout. As new onshore has essentially been banned in the UK for almost a decade there hasn't been much progress during that period but i think the largest big one near me is in Rochdale - see below. There is a lot of farm land near me and quite a few farmers have the odd turbine - in fact many moan they are not allowed to put up more as they are happy to rent their land out and can still use it for livestock etc. This is what happened with mobile phone masts incidentally - mainly put on farmers fields as it's cheap. I know they are smaller, but i rarely hear people moan about unsightly phone masts. You know a lot about wind energy generation over here do you?
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

This is the crux of it - people don't like change and don't like feeling like they're being told what to do, so the instinctive reaction is to reject it. I just spent the weekend on the west coast of Ireland which seemed to have turbines everywhere - they did nothing to detract from the beauty of the place. In your opinion, which is fine but not a fact

The other factor to all of this, be it solar or wind - the power has to be got from source to distribution.

I did not get an EV to be green cos it's not , I got one because the Govt here gave me nearly half the cost of a new EV as a reward for scrapping a 12 year old Toyota Camry. The second hand value was @ GBP 2000, I received a subsidy of GBP 28,000 towards a new Polestar 2. Road tax is 80% less per year, running cost much less etc and a very nice car with lots of bells and whistles. There are no long car journeys here so its a win win

Use guilt to force people to change to electric and cost becomes the primary factor

GB Energy is a corny name, but I'm impressed with this speedy and well thought out implementation, so different from the tory 14 years of chaos. The grid itself is full of cowboy operators and they should nationalise it to smooth the transition. If the UK can make a success of this it will reverse the belief that many share that the UK cannot manage big projects.

How will success be measured and when? At least ten years most likely. the immediate problem is insufficient size of the grid rather than the operators. We would not be in this mess if we had ignored idiot Clegg years ago Edited by HKOwen (27 Jul 2024 7.08am)
