I would have thought Everton have a number of priorities, including paying off the loans that 777 injected into the club set against day to day running costs for the second half of last season, obviously the deal with 777 seems dead but Everton will still have to repay that money, especially since when the last takeover bid failed it was those outstanding loans that were reported to be the big stumbling block.

So maybe a large proportion of Onana & eventually Branthwaite money will go in that direction -

Whilst that would help Everton out of the financial mire / makes the club more attractive to new owners, the season starts in couple weeks & Everton need to field a competitive team, I would imagine that O Brien provides a very decent cost effective replacement for Branthwaite.

They sold Onana to Villa for 」50m for a start, and we're into a new 3 year PSR cycle although that system is due to change at the end of this coming season.

The deal selling O達rien to Lyon for only 1 million Euros contained a sell on clause of 20-25%. Palace can look forward to a total payback of around 」5million when all extras are included which will go some way towards the purchase of Riad.
The Academy is starting to prove its worth.o

What irks me about this is that when he played for us he was clearly good enough.

The key questions are, would we have sold him were it not for Textor owning Lyon, and would the fee have been so low for anyone else? He was our most promising defender in the youth squads and had just returned from a strong showing on loan. I'd put money on the deal being a favour to Textor. If Palace end up getting another 」3-4 million on top of the initial fee then it's not a bad return on investment, but you just know he's going to thrive under Dyche with his aerial ability. I could see him clocking in 5+ goals this season if he plays regularly.

As has been mentioned at the start of this thread, he refused to sign a new contract & wanted 1st team football. The other reason that has also been mentioned is Roy was the manager & wouldn't have played him anyway.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

That's not a fact though, is it. Someone else posted (excuse the pun) that he wanted to stay. We'll never likely know the full story, so this just killing time for fun, but multi-club ownership does raise some questions when these things happen.

He never looked amazing for the U21s and looked cumbersome in some preseason games I remember. With the CBs we had last year I doubt he'd have got much of a look in tbh and therefore probably would have left on a free this summer.

He's obviously progressed with regular football so fairplay to him and we've made a bit of money out of it. Definitely a Dyche type of defender and it'll be interesting to see how he develops in a side that'll likely again be somewhere towards the bottom.

He痴 a big lad and was never going to be the quickest defender but he did seem decent in the air which is something we lacked given our record at set pieces in either box. It seems too much of a coincidence that Textor owns Lyon and we sell him to them for peanuts. I知 sure he has a lot to do with it. It made little sense especially when we went out and signed Holding for 」4 million. I hope he does well but not against us!

Holding actual fee I thought was 1.5m + add ons which I'm sure won't be met. I'd rather O'Brien had been the backup up but at the same time he'd barely have played and therefore his progression wouldn't have happened. I believe he wanted to leave in order to get regular football so fairplay to him, good decision.

I think a bit of perspective should be given

He had played zero first team minutes, isn't anywhere near the level of Guehi and Andersen, and probably isnt better than Richards, and less experienced than Ward and even Holding.

He had a year left on his deal, and wanted first team football.

Lyon probably got him fairly cheaper than another club due to Textor.

And its hardly like the french league is any sort of litmus test for the premier league, and Lyon by all accounts finished a lot stronger but were 2nd bottom at one point.

Whenever I saw him play, he looked very off the pace against a fast striker, but was fairly good on the ball

It's just one of those things, and yes he will no doubt score against us up at Goodison.

Championship standard at best, which is where he will end up with Everton. Not good enough for Palace. We had plenty of time to assess him before he moved on. Saw him in the Crawley friendly last season, solid, good in the air, but not the quickest. Time will tell this season, but I am sure we will eventually reach the same position. Nice to get a bit of cash in though.

I saw Jake play often with the U21s he was reliable solid if unspectacular, but speed definitely not.

All credit to him, when I saw he had been pitched in against Mbappe I could hardly believe it.

Just goes to show.
