If you are a club that inserts release clauses into your players’ contracts you are an actively selling club.
Think of a shop window with a price on a piece of merchandise.
If you want the merchandise ,and can afford it, you go and purchase it.

The argument in favour of the clauses is that the club can protect it’s investment and incentivise the better players to sign up with us through these clauses, with the players knowing we won’t stand in their way.

I can understand this argument to a degree, but for me it’s more like a case of the cart driving the horse.
The players pick and choose their clubs at times that suit them and the clubs that supposedly manage them forego their right to control their resources.
Five year contracts , with release clauses, become largely redundant.

If this seems an exaggeration does anybody seriously believe that Palace want to lose Olise this summer (with perhaps more to follow)?

That's the nature of the relationship between talented players and clubs - the player holds all the leverage in the negotiation... if they don't like what you're offering, they will nearly always have other options, particularly if they're as good as Olise is.

There are more clubs willing to pay Olise lots of money than there are 'signable' players as good as Olise, and so he holds the cards.

So you are yet another modern football fan who seems to care more about bank balances than football.

We have just signed a new centre half so along with Richards, we have 4 quality players along with Clyne and Ward, making 6, to play in a back 3.
We do need cover for Mitchell but that's hardly a reason to sell Guehi.

It amazes me that fans are so happy to see some of the best players we have ever had at the club just walk away with a wish you good luck.

The club will live and die by its performances on the pitch. That is what fans pay to see and that is what keeps us in the top division.
Top players at low prices will not always be available, and our ability to sign quality depends more on the club's ambition than money in the bank.

We are not a top six club.

The two are strongly correlated.

Yup, go with this. Seems certain posters on here have conveniently forgotten the 'elephant' in the room . . . The Agent.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Lower level clubs, in my opinion, tend to be classified as "feeder" or "selling" clubs. Happy that we are the latter. Imagine a feeder link to Manchester City - Join Palace and if you are good enough you will end up in Manchester. Wilf did not enjoy his time at Man U, and AWB - who came through at the same time as Alexander-Arnold seems to have stagnated, whereas Michael Olise has demonstrated that he is good enough to join Harry Kane in Munich. I doubt if there are any better incentives (apart from playing with two Columbian Internationals) for joining Palace. Looking forward to many treasures joining the Palace Academy.

I never saw a bank statement score a hat trick.

It wouldn't matter if we had the spending freedom of a top four club. Unless we qualify for the Champions League or win something, no top players will come to Palace. We have previously got our talent from lower leagues but have recently become more attractive through 10 years in the Premier League.

If we continue to sell our best players, all the money in the world will not prevent us from remaining in mediocrity.

If we had wanted to keep Olise, I'm sure a big pay rise would have done it. The trouble is that if you have one player on £200k and the others on far less, there is an obvious issue with players wanting pay rises, not to mention the immediate impact on the wages budget.

In this case, the release clause was the problem. It was low because of Olise's rapid rise in profile. Had he been so sought after last season, I'm sure the clause would have been far higher.

Any other players under contract without release clauses cannot leave unless we allow them to. Having lost a star player, I'm sure the board would not sanction another sale unless the money offered was off the scale.

I hope Eze has no desire to leave or has some silly release clause, because the fans of this club deserve better.

They have endured enough mediocrity.

It always makes me laugh when this opinion gets recycled. Why do the fans of this club or of any other club for that matter deserve anything at all and why? Taking HOL as an example, hardly any of us actually pays any money to be fans. Suffering a string of poor performances on illegal streams entitles you to nothing whatsoever.

They are just being realistic about how football works.

I’ve never seen a manager score one either, but I’m sure we would all agree they’re quite important.

Top players already come to Palace and other non champions league clubs.

There are many examples of ‘all the money in the world’ getting clubs out of mediocrity.

Every club is a selling club, it’s all about timing and how you manage a player to get the best potential from them in the limited time of their careers. We happen to be in a purple patch at the moment with the quality of player we have.

The last thing we need is to sell too many players in one go which we have been guilty of before and it cost us our top flight status. I’m sure this won’t happen in this instance, but it is annoying that a player can be contacted under contract, get their heads turned then all the shenanigans over what they want to pay for the player.

Will be glad when this transfer window closes, it’s the uncertainty with what team we will have come the 17th August….

Very clever, but short sighted.

I bought a football shirt for my grandson last week, like I do every season.
Perhaps I should encourage him to support a club with more ambition?

Those that pay for season tickets certainly deserve better, and the club also needs to attract fans for the future.
