I believe that Compton played football for Arsenal in the winter and cricket in the summer. Of course in those days you had proper seasons for sport. I'm not sure what you mean. Cricket then, as now, was always April to September followed by winter tours for international players and football August to May followed by an international tournament every two years. All I meant was that things were more relaxed in Compton's era than Hurst's regarding which sport you were committed to. In short; West Ham wouldn't allow Hurst to turn professional if he remained with Essex.

Just that today it couldn't happen due to the length of the season and the value of the players.

Maybe Chris Balderstone who played a few hundred league games and got capped by the England cricket team in the 70s. When Botham played a bit of football it seemed like more of a publicity stunt.

A nice thought but unlikely. '501, double-out' wasn't really a thing when Woosnam was in his heyday. And in any case today's dartboard wasn't commonplace back then, and didn't exist at all in the north-west where Woosnam lived. Dartboards had numerous different styles and layouts, certainly varying from region to region and often from pub to pub. The treble ring, which enables a 9-dart 501, is a relatively recent addition. Not wishing to dilute Woosnam's achievements but according to what I've read, he DIDN'T play in an FA Cup final but he did play for Man City when they finished runners-up in the league. In addition to the Wimbledon doubles title mentioned by Teddy Eagle, he also won an Olympic gold medal and a silver one, in tennis. I kind of knew but thanks for the confirmation - interesting. Darts wouldn't have been a game for a gentleman anyway. But shove a suit and bow tie on a bunch of drunken pub gamblers and snooker's fine.

'stars' from reality TV shows barely qualify for being talented at anything. Knuckle-draggers. Bob Dylan is a one-trick pony......singing songs.
Rowan Atkinson is a licensed HGV Lorry driver. Peter Cook spoke fluent French & German. Napoleon Bonaparte .......military genius , wrote new laws that have endured across all the EU , costume designer for the military, Ted Kazinsky, the Unabomber. Elite mathematician, innovative terrorist - extremely difficult to catch for 20 years , social commentator who wrote the prophetic 'the industrial society and its future' Goethe, the apogee of the whole thread. Probably more talented than all the other feckers above, combined. Edited by PalazioVecchio (16 Jun 2024 1.25pm) Edited by PalazioVecchio (16 Jun 2024 1.51pm)

Not sure if mentioned. John Surtees. The only man to win World Motorcycle Championships on 2 wheels, and a Formula 1 championship on 4 wheels.

I also am an LGV Holder & also an PCV Holder along with being both CPC holders & a OL Holder. 2 more years for my Driver Licence's, not for my CPC's nor my OL.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

I'm fully aware that LGV is the current abbreviation. It wasn't me who posted HGV, but - unusually for me - I didn't want to be accused of pedantry by correcting it. But since you've opted for pedantry, please note that the plural of LGV is LGVs not LGV's and the plural of CPC is CPCs.

Ian Botham, cricket for England and various counties. Also played a few games for scunthorpe United. He chose a career in cricket, but could have easily been football.
