After the first 30 mins our performance was very disappointing.
Unable to retain possession, a dearth of rhythm and fluency, Pickford thwacking the ball long to those who were outmuscled by muscular opponents. We lost control of the game.

Indeed we got the all-important victory but I suspect the team and manager will face shot and shell from the media.

I wasn't even that impressed with the first first 30 mins! playing slow, tedious boring football, struggling to break down a 'well organised' side. then it actually went and worked and we scored the first goal. I expected us to then free up and really show what we can do when Serbia chased the game. We created 1 chance in 30 mins. With our plethora of 'world class' attacking talent that's massively disappointing.

"It was a Team effort, I guess it took all players working together to lose this one"

I understand your assertion, however at least we had some control in the opening half hour, albeit some of the build-up play was tedious and uninspiring.

Clearly,Southgate has been tutored by Mr.Hodgson, the destroyer of the beautiful game.

Ollie for England!

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

As I witnessed the drivel last night I readily admit that my cerebral matter veered in the direction of concluding that had Oliver Glasner been manager the performance would have been greatly enhanced.

I agree, we had control of the ball, but without that Bellingham goal, had zero penetration. 3 shots on target in 90 mins. That is embarrassing given the talent in that team.

Watching Germany or Spain, we are miles behind them.

This is the most demoralising part. GS didnt seam to bothered about the 2nd half performance. Did their keeper only really have to make 2 saves (Kane and Trent).

We'll win the group, I suspect with 7 points (Danes may hold us). And we'll excuse the performances with the fact that we are winning. And by god we'll be in for a shock when we play a decent team.

You are right, he didn't. In a snippet shown on the telly this morning he summarised that "we were forced to suffer more than we would have wanted". Why were we "forced" and how much did we want to suffer if not as much as we did? Even Mrs YT, who knows nothing at all about football other than the fact that I support CPFC and that they have a lot of black players, said "why didn't he (Southgate) do something about it then, rather than just sit and watch it happen?!"

To try and be positive, it was a win and a clean sheet. Pressure is off now. I'd rather we peaked later in the tournament than the beginning.

For me, one of the biggest concerns was his interview afterwards, Southgate learned that 'we need to conserve our energy better in the first half'. What the hell was he watching? He's deluded.

I think we'd all prefer something along the lines of 'we were disjointed and struggled, but ultimately we ground out a win after a tough night. We need to improve'.

With the array of attacking talent we have in the squad, 3 shots on target against a fairly average side is pathetic. Tactics were too negative after going ahead, Foden was lost, Kane non existent. These are world class players performing every week at some of the best clubs in the world. If it wasn't for a decent save from Pickford, we'd have thrown that away.

To think he was recently linked with Manchester United is laughable. I don't think a single Premier League club would be interested.

He's a nice bloke who's created a positive atmosphere around the national team. He's tactically miles behind the other managers.

I hope he makes me eat my words.

Several players barely touched the ball. Was nowhere near good enough. Frankly, I don't see it changing. Glaringly obvious to everyone that the system is wrong. Who are the England coaches? Surely they can see it.
Up front, they don't know whether to stay wide or come inside, at the back the wing backs do nothing. Particularly Trippier offers no width - no surprise as he is not a left back. Was it theoretically Walker on the other side? It wasn't the job he was doing. What was Alexander-Arnold doing? His main job seemed to be to annoy set piece takers - another area where England have worsened.
Then there's the pass to side to side and no movement. I don't know what to say - go to three at the back? Walker, Stones, Guehi? There aren't any decent wingbacks are there - so no. Go four, four, two - don't think anyone can partner Kane, four, four, one, one - no holding player. The whole squad seems to be based on Rice who currently doesn't seem to offer much.
It's baffling, it's boring and it's not even that great defensively. Serbia made England look rubbish second half.
It's clear that England are not going all the way like this.
As others have stated - several teams look better currently.
