Well that was rubbish but may have done our boys a favour. So many poor performances last night the longer it went on the better Wharton is looking. Guehi did okay so will start not sure who with as they seem to falling like 9 pins. Eze was ignored when he came on we kept punting the ball down the right. Mainoo err no thanks, too negative. Palmer showed he was lively but several times he hesitated when we needed a first time ball. There is a player there Kane needs to tell him just bloody shoot. Gordon - Just rubbish. I expect the team will look a lot different for the first game, it better had anyway. Edited by Badger11 (08 Jun 2024 7.13am)

We would have won last night if both Wharton and Eze had been on for at least half the game! Or, more truthfully, had a much better chance. Wharton because he doesn’t always pass sideways but spots the runs that others miss. Eze because his close control and ability to run at defences disorganises them so gaps appear. We would also have lost possession more often as a consequence but that’s not always a bad thing. Forcing the opposition to move upfield can leave gaps behind so when possession is regained with aggressive pressing they can be exploited. We have seen it ourselves these past months. Are we about to see it again?

I also thought it strange choosing Ramsdale who hasn’t played much over Henderson last night ? We should have 3 keepers that have played regularly lately in the squad. Henderson would have saved that shot last night and we would be moaning about a 0:0 rather than a defeat against poor opposition. We might even have won it rather than having to get back into it the match against a team that just had 11 behind the ball?

Glorified training session really, no one wanted to put a foot in and get injured at this stage, even Southgate said that.

Eze, Olise and Wharton playing together would pull the strings ! Edited by Badger11 (08 Jun 2024 7.13am) Edited by rob1969 (08 Jun 2024 4.45pm)

We’ve had a superb squad in recent tournaments that would have won them if Southgate hadn’t been the manager. The same problems have been shown in the last couple of matches where the build up is just too slow and allows the opposition to defend in numbers easily and have the odd breakaway to punish us as happened tonight. Bellingham coming in will help but sadly with Southgate as manager we will screw this competition up as well as with the past winnable ones. Our midfield is just to cautious and our passing not direct enough :-(

OK, it is getting weird now But I humbly suggest that the only person in English football to fix the shambolic England football team's structure is Adam Wharton. Who was playing in the championship in January. I didn't really too pay much attention to Mainoo, because he plays for the Man Utd and I don't bother to know anything about them, but apparently he's very good. Now my understanding from the Euro coverage is that he used to be a striker, loved futsal, and dropped back to midfield to get more of the ball. So, given a decent goal return, it's safe to say he is a very attacking midfielder. That is why he likes playing with Declan Rice, because as he says he can go forward and leave Declan to cover behind. Totally wrong. We need Rice going forward like he does for Arsenal. Conor Gallagher - no big explanation. As Palace fans we know he likes to get forward, press and grab a goal or too. He does not have any midfield discipline or short, direct, simple and FAST passing we need in midfield to give the structure and give the super stars up fron the ball quickly in good positions before they are marked. TAA - that fantasy is now surely a totally busted flush. A dream that didn't happen. Not a central midfielder. Not ever. No Jordan Henderson, thank god, no Phillips, promising for a while ,but, thank god. There is only one choice. Adam Wharton. Is it a risk, given his inexperience? Yes, but the other option is a 100% certainly of going out in the last 16 against Germany or last 8 against someone else by keeping it as it is. Ok, I accept there is another choice. Play Bellingham instead of TAA in central midfield and Foden as No. 10. That is what will probably happen and Gordon on the left.

Eze didn’t do himself any favours for last 15 mins. He looks lost and half asleep. I appreciate he didn’t get many passes or chances but you look at him and he seems blaaaaaah. Gordon will now get the nod.

Gordon will now get the nod. Agreed. He was caught on the ball several times and seemed totally at a loss about his position or the pace of the game (at least Denmark's pace - perhaps he was trying to fit in with England's pedestrian tortoise pace). He won't be first choice after that. If Southgate wants to freshen it up then Wharton and Gordon are yet to be tainted by the dismal performances we have seen.
