Ismael. We paid £2.75m - not a huge sum even then (late-90s), but twice as much as we received when he left 9 months later. I beg to differ. It was a staggeringly high fee at the time. It remained our record fee paid for 14 years.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

Some formations require a player that can run around aimlessly, pointing at random spots on the pitch. Punch was the best in the business. Good value then?

Seem to recall a heated debate when he played. He was an enigma. Complete disaster when he played but when he was injured we ALWAYS lost. I opined he operated as a glue that bonded the shape and enabled the others. I know, fetching a bit. There had to be a reason successive coaches always played him when fit. Sorry there's no way Puncheon can be described as a 'complete disaster when he played'. He was regularly our best player, particularly in the 13/14 and 14/15 seasons. He doesn't quite make a best signings list for me, but he shouldn't be anywhere near a worst either.

I know he was popular with some, I think his important goals especially for Pulis and his cup final goal elevated him to better than what he actually was, but for me he was lazy and went missing in far too many games. But I’ll never forget that cup final goal, for just a few brief minutes,we thought he’d won us the cup

Punch was a great and cheap (free?) signing who gave us some incredible memories and seemed to also be a fan. To put him among the worst is both absurd and despicable. Definitely one whose goals and contributions positively affected the history of the club. I suspect nobody was more disappointed than him at the form in which his career with us ended. But then again he had a long period under Pardew so that would ruin many a good footballer.

I think Benteke suffered from playing under a succession of defensive managers and living off scraps. He was great under Allardyce. Look at the change in perspectives on Mateta. So much of it due to a shift on team mentality and approach. People hate Benteke. I'm definitely not one of them

Restricting this to CPFC2010's transfer business: Worst: Florian Marange. The definition of a waste of money given he didn't even make the 25 player squad once signed. Best: Wilf's reacquisition from Man United. Was unreal for a few seasons in his mid twenties when, without him, I think we would have struggled to stay up.

I loved Punchy, he was hit and miss but i will never forget his goal against Norwich, what it meant to him.
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I know that is harsh, he did give us some memorable moments I’ll give him that, especially one of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen

I'm definitely not one of them I think he also suffered from being lazy and wanting the ball on a plate for him all the time. Good strikers who go through a lean spell for whatever reason work hard for the team and try to make something happen, he was visibly lazy and for a big bloke he didn’t exactly attack the ball in the area.

I'm definitely not one of them I think it didn't help Benteke, but he was also incredibly wasteful with the chances he did get and had a crap work rate. Mateta, even when he wasn't scoring, was never overly wasteful or lazy.
