Serious question but has anyone seen him play at left wing back? A number of posters are suggesting that he will be better than Mitchel just wondering if this is based on anything?

Last I can remember was for Leicester - that was what we signed him for wasn't it? He must have played left back for us but a long time ago now is my guess.

Personally I'd stick him straight in ahead of Mitchell at LWB as soon as he's available.

Mitchell is an ok left back in flat back four but woeful as a wing back I'm sorry to say. I wouldn't be surprised if we offloaded him in summer because he doesn't suit Glasner's style. So poor in possession and incapable of keeping possession.

You may be right as by my reckoning he only has 1 year left on his contract. If the club saw him as a long term prospect I would have expected them to have agreed a new deal with him by now.

It will be interesting to see what the club's view is of Adamarola's loan spell at RWDM. O'Brien's stint there was a good one and Tayo has started all seven games since he moved there in the January window.

Anything is better than Mitchell, atrocious against Spurs.

I know he played left back for Leicester, but did he play left wing back, and was he any good?

There seems to be an assumption on this thread with very little evidence.

He played left wing back for them.

Clearly was not rated which is why the club let him go.

Driving forward is his game in bursts which is something he is good at but nothing else. (This is why Big Sam signed him Palace had no players like this and was very slow Schlupp and PVA made a big difference)

This discussion makes me nostalgic for the times in recent years when we have had a combination of PVA, Schlupp, Loftus Cheek and Zaha attacking from the left side.
This season we have carried minimal threat down the left.
If we persist with wing backs we really need a PVA type to occupy the left wing back position.
He was always happiest going forward.
Schlupp may me able to do a short term job there but seems to have lost much of the pace and thrust which could have made him a viable option in the position.

I think it is an assumption but I would suggest not a 'bad one'.

Schlupp was signed by Allardyce as we had nothing at LB and he gave us some options, with pace (I assumed at the time anyway). A LWB position now, with three CBs covering him, may not be the worst idea however I worry that he has spent so long drifting about our midfield with little responsibility, he may lack the discipline needed.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

That is my thought.

The consensus on this board seems to be that midfield Schlupp switches off too much and doesn't track back so I am not sure why that qualifies him to be a good LWB. I get that he has pace and attacking instincts but would we be sacrificing defence for attack. Bearing in mind we are leaking goals that sounds a bit risky.

I'd also add the fact he is north of 30 now and looked to have spent the summer singlehandedly growing the Krispy Kreme empire in this country too.

I like Schlupp, I've long been a fan of his and I certainly see where the thought of him at LWB comes from, especially with a poor Mitchell there, but I have sincere reservations.

The thing is that although Schlupp's goal contribution stats are better than Mitchell's, they're still not amazing.

Mitchell has 2 goals and 7 assists from 136 career appearances.

Schlupp has 43 goals and 29 assists from 390. So roughly one every five and a half games.

Since playing in the PL Schlupp has never contributed more than 3 assists in a season and he's often played in a far more advanced position than Mitchell.

Difficult to see a massive upturn in those stats at the age of 31 as well.

Schlupp played LB (in a 433) for most games he played under big Sam - he played there when we beat Arsenal 3-0. Under Roy he has been preferred in midfield or as an impact sub. The only time i remember him playing there was as an early sub v Bournemouth when PVA went off injured. Sakho had been sent off and 10 man Palace won with a late Jeff thunder bolt.
So he hasn't really played LB for over 5 years now.

On paper he could play LWB , but i thought the same filling in for Zaha on the left this season and he has been woeful.

Personally i think it's time to release him this summer
