I was thinking Charles too and definitely not Bellamy. For the first I'd say an American. At a guess, someone like MacArthur. Just guesses.
The plant one could also be someone like Darwin or the guy that drew things under a microscope in the 17th Century. Forgotten his name.

I know some good political ones:

"conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives"

"I was told politics was the second oldest profession, I have come to realise it bears a striking resemblance to the first".

I remember most of these but for the life of me cannot remember who said them. I get the feeling one might be somebody like Cleese, is one Thatcher?
